Lying for the "cause"
A 23-year-old woman who claimed she fought back against three would-be rapists after coming home from New York City Gay Pride celebrations made the whole thing up, police said Thursday.
Detectives pored over video hoping to get pictures of the trio said to have attacked the woman about 3 a.m. Monday — grabbing her in a headlock, punching her and trying to rip her clothes off.
Video showed the woman walking down Shepherd Ave. in East New York as she exited the subway station. But Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said the video shows no attack.
“We confronted her with our investigation, which is video clips,” Boyce said. “She recanted her statement.
“It did not, in fact, happen,” he added.
Boyce said it appeared to be a case of copycat reporting, pointing to an incident that got media attention earlier this week.
In that incident, which took place about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, a 34-year-old woman walking down 16th St. in Windsor Terrace was dragged to the ground by a man who tried to pull her clothes off.
He is seen on video punching her in the back, but she kicked him repeatedly and he fled.
Boyce said Thursday two persons of interest have been identified in that incident, though they haven’t yet determined which one is the suspect.
