NYU librarian complains of ‘racial fatigue’ she feels around too many white people

Imagine being so isolated and so insecure in your identity that being around people different than you would give you fatigue. Meet April Hathcock, a Scholarly Communications Librarian at New York University (NYU,) who complained of so-called ‘racial fatigue’ following her attendance at the American Librarian Association’s (ALA) annual conference for librarians across the nation.

In a blog post, Hathcock unloaded on whites and vented her frustrations.

“I usually come back from conferences pretty exhausted anyway… But when you combine that with 5 days of being talked at, over, and through by folks in a profession that’s 88% white…well, let’s just say I hit my limit.”

According to Hathcock, “race-fatigue is a real physical, mental, and emotional condition that people of color experience after spending a considerable amount of time dealing with the micro- and macro-aggressions that inevitably occur when in the presence of white people.” 

Hathcock noted that race fatigue can happen at any time, not just at majority-white conferences, and that the intensity of race fatigue can increase if a conference is longer or has a majority of white people.

In her post, Hathcock described the conference as “being tone-policed and condescended to and ‘splained to.”

Additionally, she accused white, male librarians of consistently holding higher jobs with better pay, because “they (white men) don’t understand the basics of systemic oppression.”

Perhaps the most bizarre point in her post however, was when she bemoaned her white colleagues who are sensitive to her feelings on race. She claims that those asking about microaggressions didn’t care about her well-being but instead wanted to take pleasure in her suffering, so that they could feel superior in some way. 

“Five days of having white colleagues corner you to ‘hear more’ about the microaggressions you’ve suffered and witnessed,” wrote Hathcock.  “Not because they want to check in on your fatigue, but because they take a weird pleasure in hearing the horror stories and feeling superior to their ‘less woke’ racial compatriots.”

Hathcock is no stranger to controversy among librarians. Following the election of President Donald Trump, she immediately began organizing several librarians to act as activists against any ALA efforts to work with President Donald Trump.

In a separate blog post titled, “F@ck You ALA,” she accused the organization of “colluding with fascists” and “normalizing hate,” in response to their planned efforts to work with the President to ensure funding for libraries.

Red Alert Politics reached out to Hathcock for comment but did not receive a response in time for publication. She may be on vacation as she notes in her blog post:

“I’ll be getting some much needed R & R in this racial battle called life.”
