Video: Morbidly obese bandits easily caught by bystander as they make very slow getaway with trunk full of shoes
The trio were allegedly stealing from a Burlington store in California when a nearby man caught the getaway on video as it slowly happened.
According to the Daily Mail, the Burlington department store location on North Freeway Boulevard in Sacramento was the target of the heist, which happened during the daytime with alarms blaring.
"Damn, look at these people stealing! Say hi to the camera!" the amateur videographer said on video. "Look at this!" the man added before he remarked that the group were also parked in a handicapped spot.
"What's your name, ma'am?" The bystander asked one of the women while filming the getaway car's license plate. The women then backed their red Dodge Charger through the discarded shopping carts before fleeing the parking lot.
The Daily Mail spoke to Sacramento Police, who told the outlet that they are "aware of the incident." They added that "officers responded, a police report was generated and it is an active investigation."
Burlington also provided comment, saying that the company is "aware of this incident." A spokeswoman reportedly said that it is "an ongoing investigation, and we are partnering with the local authorities."
Burlington has approximately 1,000 locations in the United States and Puerto Rico.
Crime continues to increase across California, as property crime reached nearly 1,000,000 cases in 2022, according to government statistics. Larceny-theft accounts for the largest portion of property crimes, with more than 577,000 instances in 2022.
Violent crime has also increased year over year since 2019.
Just days before the Burlington theft, a CNN camera crew witnessed three thefts at the same San Francisco convenience store in a span of just 30 minutes.
Rapper 50 Cent condemned Los Angeles' returning to a no-bail policy in early July 2023, telling followers to "watch how bad it gets."
Los Angeles County reinstated its previously halted no-bail stance for criminals in May 2023, a policy that even applies to repeat offenders.
The California state reparations task force recommended the end to cash bail due to racism and potential "trauma."
"The cash bail system is at the core of many of the class and race-based inequities in the criminal legal system," the task force wrote in its proposal draft. "The task force accordingly recommends that the legislature take all steps necessary to definitively end cash bail."
