Myopic unions

They don't get it. The plant was closed because it was a joint venture with General Motors. It produced the Toyota Matrix and the Pontiac Vibe, which was a re-badged version of the Matrix. GM pulled out of the venture because the Pontiac brand has been killed off or as John Cleese would say "assumed room temperature" and the Matrix sales are sluggish to say the least.
Unions always choose the short term solution. Make products nobody want in order to keep members employed and dues coming. This thinking is the mandatory first step to building Trabants and Ladas.
