No one else bothered with Gaines’ body and just one person, believed to be a 7-Eleven employee, called 911. Why some neighborhoods are dangerous.
A family member of an assault victim is questioning the state of humanity after her cousin was knocked unconscious, robbed and then left lying in the middle of a busy street. After minutes of his body being ignored by a group of bystanders, a cab accidentally ran over him and killed him.
The victim, 32-year-old Marques Gaines, was reportedly attacked by a man who was loitering outside a Chicago 7-Eleven in the early morning on February 7.
City cameras captured the shocking assault and shows Gaines being knocked unconscious by one brutal punch. As soon as Gaines was down, two men can be seen rushing to his body to allegedly rob him. The family claims Gaines’ cellphone and debit cards were stolen off his body.
No one else bothered with Gaines’ body and just one person, believed to be a 7-Eleven employee, called 911.

For Drexina Nelson, the victim’s cousin, knowing one of the bystanders could have saved her loved one is a difficult reality to accept.
“We as people, as humans, we should care for one another,” she told the Chicago Tribune. “Who leaves a person in the street for that long? That’s devastating to me — the fact that he could have been saved. He could still be here with us.”
