The number of police officers who were shot and killed this year jumped 67 percent compared to 2015, according to the latest data from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
Sixty police officers died from firearm-related incidents so far in 2016, up from 36 by this point last year. The overall number of police fatalities, including traffic deaths and other causes, increased 18 percent.

The data covers from Jan. 1 to Nov. 25 of 2016 and 2015.

This year has also seen the most targeted attacks, or ambushes, on police since 1995.

Texas and California, the largest states in the U.S., saw the most police fatalities, followed by Louisiana.

The data comes nearly a week after a San Antonio cop was shot to death in a traffic stop. Officials have described the attack as a targeted killing, similar to the recent police shootings in Dallas and Baton Rouge, La.
