De Blasio reconsiders helping feds with illegal immigrants
Mayor de Blasio on Monday said for the first time that he is open to expanding the list of 170 offenses that trigger city cooperation with the feds to transfer undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes.
The mayor agreed to the change in response to criticism from Assembly member Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island) that a number of significant crimes — including forcible touching and welfare fraud — were excluded from the list.
“Why would you protect individuals who are here illegally committing these crimes instead of putting your citizenry first?” Malliotakis asked the mayor during his testimony on the state budget.
