Here in a few paragraphs is the core of the Greece tragicomedy. Every leftist touchstone is in play

A Greek Default Would Be a Valuable Lesson in Basic Economics

by GEORGE WILL June 20, 2015 8:00 PM @GEORGEWILLF Now come Greeks bearing the gift of confirmation that Margaret Thatcher was right about socialist governments: “They always run out of other people’s money.” Greece, from whose ancient playwrights Western drama descends, is in an absurdist melodrama about securing yet another cash infusion from international creditors. This would add another boulder to a mountain of debt almost twice the size of Greece’s gross domestic product. This protracted dispute will result in desirable carnage if Greece defaults, thereby becoming a constructively frightening example to all democracies doling out unsustainable, growth-suppressing entitlements.

In January, Greek voters gave power to the left-wing Syriza party, one third of which, The Economist reports, consists of “Maoists, Marxists and supporters of Che Guevara.” Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, 40, a retired student radical, immediately denounced a European Union declaration criticizing Russia’s dismemberment of Ukraine. He chose only one Cabinet member with prior government experience — a leader of Greece’s Stalinist Communist party. Tsipras’s minister for culture and education says Greek education “should not be governed by the principle of excellence . . . it is a warped ambition.” Practicing what he preaches, he proposes abolishing university entrance exams.  What’s Going on with Greece? Voters chose Syriza because it promised to reverse reforms, particularly of pensions and labor laws, demanded by creditors, and to resist new demands for rationality. Tsipras immediately vowed to rehire 12,000 government employees. His shrillness increasing as his options contract, he says the European Union, the European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund are trying to “humiliate” Greece. How could one humiliate a nation that chooses governments committed to Rumpelstiltskin economics, the belief that the straw of government largesse can be spun into the gold of national wealth? Tsipras’s approach to mollifying those who hold his nation’s fate in their hands is to say they must respect his “mandate” to resist them. He thinks Greek voters, by making delusional promises to themselves, obligate other European taxpayers to fund them. Tsipras, who says the creditors are “pillaging” Greece, is trying to pillage his local governments, which are resisting his extralegal demands that they send him their cash reserves.  Greece, the Euro, and the People G Yanis Varoufakis, Greece’s finance minister, is an academic admirer of Nobel laureate John Nash, the Princeton genius depicted in the movie A Beautiful Mind, who recently died. Varoufakis is interested in Nash’s work on game theory, especially the theory of cooperative games in which two or more participants aim for a resolution better for all than would result absent cooperation. Varoufakis’s idea of cooperation is to accuse the creditors whose money Greece has been living on of “fiscal waterboarding.” Tsipras tells Greece’s creditors to read For Whom the Bell Tolls, Ernest Hemingway’s novel of the Spanish Civil War. His passive-aggressive message? “Play nicely or we will kill ourselves.” Since joining the Eurozone in 2001, Greece has borrowed a sum 1.7 times its 2013 GDP. Since joining the Eurozone in 2001, Greece has borrowed a sum 1.7 times its 2013 GDP. Its 25 percent unemployment (50 percent among young workers) results from a 25 percent shrinkage of GDP. It is a mendicant reduced to hoping to “extend and pretend” forever. But extending the bailout and pretending that creditors will someday be paid encourages other European socialists to contemplate shedding debts — other people’s money that is no longer fun. Greece, with just 11 million people and 2 percent of the Eurozone’s GDP, is unlikely to cause a contagion by leaving the zone. If it also leaves the misbegotten European Union, this evidence of the EU’s mutability might encourage Britain’s “Euro-skeptics” when, later this year, that nation has a referendum on reclaiming national sovereignty by withdrawing from the EU. If Greece so cherishes its sovereignty that it bristles at conditions imposed by creditors, why is it in the EU, the perverse point of which is to “pool” nations’ sovereignties in order to dilute national consciousness?  Mass Delusion among Greece’s Far Left The EU has a flag no one salutes, an anthem no one sings, a president no one can name, a parliament whose powers subtract from those of national legislatures, a bureaucracy no one admires or controls, and rules of fiscal rectitude that no member is penalized for ignoring. It does, however, have in Greece a member whose difficulties are wonderfully didactic. It cannot be said too often: There cannot be too many socialist smashups. The best of these punish reckless creditors whose lending enables socialists to live, for a while, off other people’s money. The world, which owes much to ancient Athens’s legacy, including the idea of democracy, is indebted to today’s Athens for the reminder that reality does not respect a democracy’s delusions.

Obama's leftist arrogance. There are unknown consequences from the breakdown of a civil society

Obama defies federal judge, fails to rescind wrongly issued amnesties

Not all recipients have returned documents
 - The Washington Times - Monday, June 29, 2015
The Obama administration still hasn't fully rescinded the 2,000 three-year amnesties it wrongly issued four months ago in violation of a court order, government lawyers recently admitted in court, spurring a stern response from the judge who said the matter must be cleaned up by the end of July — or else.
It's the latest black eye for President Obama's amnesty policy and the immigration agency charged with carrying it out. The agency bungled the rollout, issuing three-year amnesties even while assuring the judge it had stopped all action hours after a Feb. 16 injunction.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the agency responsible for overseeing the amnesty, said it's trying to round up all of the permits, sending out two-year amnesties and pleading with the illegal immigrants to return the three-year cards.
But they are having trouble getting some of the lucky recipients to send them back.
"USCIS is carefully tracking the returns of the three-year EAD cards, and many have been returned within weeks," the agency said in a statement to The Washington Times. "USCIS continues to take steps to collect the remaining three-year EAD cards."
The agency didn't answer specific questions about how many remain outstanding, nor about what methods will be used to claw back the ones that folks refuse to return.
The three-year deportation amnesty was part of Mr. Obama's November 2014 announcement when he proposed granting a three-year tentative deportation amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. It was to be a massive expansion, in both eligibility and duration, of his 2012 amnesty, which granted two-year amnesty to so-called Dreamers.
Judge Andrew S. Hanen blocked the expansion in February, issuing an injunction that remains in place even as the administration appeals it to a higher court. The next hearing on that appeal is due July 10.
But Judge Hanen was shocked to learn that USCIS issued the 2,000 three-year amnesties even after he'd issued his injunction.
"I expect you to resolve the 2,000; I'm shocked that you haven't," Judge Hanen told the Justice Department at a hearing last week, according to the San Antonio Express-News. "If they're not resolved by July 31, I'm going to have to figure out what action to take."
Homeland Security says it's changed the duration of the work permits from three years to two years in its computer systems, but getting the cards returned from the illegal immigrants themselves is tougher.
The office of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is leading the lawsuit challenging the amnesty and who won the February injunction against the policy, didn't respond to a request for comment on the outstanding permits.
Josh Blackman, an assistant professor at the South Texas College of Law, who has filed briefs in the case opposing the Obama administration's claims, said he believes the administration is trying to comply in good faith with Judge Hanen's order, but USCIS's difficulties show how difficult managing the full amnesty would be.
"The entire nature of this case was that agents were given a free rein to approve as many applications as possible. DHS can't keep track of its own agents and who's being approved for deferrals and work authorization," he said.
Mr. Obama announced the policy in order to circumvent Congress, which is moving the other direction away from legalization and toward a crackdown on most illegal immigrants.
He said those that qualify — as many as 5 million illegal immigrants — could earn a two-year stay of deportation and a work permit, which would usually qualify them for Social Security numbers, which they can use to access some other benefits, including tax credits.
Judge Hanen ruled on Feb. 16 that Mr. Obama didn't follow the law in announcing his policy because it's a major change, and under federal law those must be put out for public notice and comment. Judge Hanen said he didn't have to address the major constitutional issues of whether Mr. Obama stole power that belongs to Congress, though he could still reach those questions should his injunction be overturned.
Between Nov. 20, when Mr. Obama announced his policy, and the Feb. 16 injunction, Homeland Security issued 108,000 three-year permits. Their legality is questionable and Texas and the Obama administration are arguing over how to handle them.
Even after the Feb. 16 injunction, and even as Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson was assuring Congress no permits were being issued, his department did issue 2,000 more three-year permits — something all sides agree was illegal.

More on the Freddie Gray case.

Whoopsie – Baltimore Evidence Includes Transport Van Witness Donta Allen “On Video” Telling Investigators Freddie Gray Was Jumping Around “Like A Madman”…

Oh, how we’ve seen this entire story play out before. Donta Allen 2015, is Rachel Jeantel 2013 !! A prosecution witness that actually deconstructs the prosecution. Now we know why Baltimore State Attorney Marilyn Mosby wants to block public awareness of the evidence.
According to Megyn Kelly part of the “Brady evidence” turned over by prosecutors to the defense team in Baltimore includes video of van passenger Donta Allen giving his statement to “investigators”. Watch:

You might have heard Donta mention his attorney in the snippet with Don Lemon in the clip above. His attorney is Paul Gardner; and when you understand the relationship between Donta Allen, Paul Gardner and prosecutor Marilyn Mosby – you cannot help but see the parallels to Rachel Jeantel, Benjamin Crump and prosecutor Angela Corey in 2012.
Both teams, Crump/Corey in 2012/2013, and Gardner/Mosby in 2015, are presenting ridiculously fraudulent cases, assembled upon a foundation of lies, and supported by fraudulent witnesses.  Here’s the backstory on Gardner/Mosby
BALTIMORE — A prisoner sharing a police transport van with Freddie Gray told investigators that he could hear Gray “banging against the walls” of the vehicle and believed that he “was intentionally trying to injure himself,” according to a police document obtained by The Washington Post. (link)

(HatTip maggiemoowho) Sanford Florida had Rachel Jeantel – a witness on behalf of Trayvon Martin. Baltimore Maryland has Donta Allen – a witness on behalf of Freddie Gray.

Donta Allen was introduced to the public, as a witness in the Freddie Gray death, by the domestic partner of Baltimore Deputy Attorney Janice Bledsoe, reporter Jayne Miller (WBAL-TV).

Quickly Donta Allen began appearing on national TV broadcasts. However, just like Dorian Johnson and Rachel Jeantel, Donta doesn’t appear alone. Donta is accompanied by his “attorney”/handler, Paul W Gardner II.

Although it doesn’t appear Mr. Gardner is actually supposed to be representing people in Maryland any longer.

2013 – Paul W. Gardner II, one of Baltimore’s leading entertainment lawyers, was disbarred Feb. 11 [2013] after the state’s court of appeals upheld a ruling that he had overbilled clients and misused money he had received as a retainer.
Gardner, whose clients have included Obama White House party crashers Tareq and Michaele Salahi and “The Wire” actress Felicia “Snoop” Pearson, can’t practice law in Maryland until reinstated to the state bar by the Maryland Court of Appeals. He is managing partner of the Gardner Law Group.
Glenn Grossman, bar counsel for the State’s Attorney Grievance Commission, told the AFRO that reinstatement of the privilege to practice law is possible but only after a process that starts with a petition for reinstatement submitted to the court of appeals.
Grossman said 14 disbarred lawyers have been reinstated in the state in the last 10 years. The average interval between disbarment and reinstatement was “nine to 10 years,” he said.
To be reinstated, a disbarred lawyer must list debts and whether restitution, if necessary, has been paid.
The improprieties the court found Gardner guilty of included having paid his office manager for legal work, though the manager is not an attorney; improperly filing a nonimmigrant work visa application; and charging a woman $25,000 to negotiate a contract between the woman’s son and a rapper. The contract was never executed.

Gardner served as a law clerk for Judge Robert Bell and according to his law firm’s web site, he was a member of the Howard Law Review. (link)

However, as with all ‘tangled webs’ of interconnected networks, Paul Gardner’s representation of the primary witness in The State of Maryland -vs- The Baltimore Six might present an issue for the Prosecuting attorney, Marilyn Mosby.  Here’s Gardner attending a fundraiser for Nick Mosby:

Then again, who is REALLY going to be concerned about a disbarred attorney representing a key witness in a controversial political trial, and who happens to be friends with the State Attorney prosecuting the case?

Attorney in Charge of IRS’ Email Production Now in Charge of State Dep’t Emails. Proving this administration rewards those who do their bidding even if it's illegal

Attorney in Charge of IRS’ Email Production Now in Charge of State Dep’t Emails

(CNSNews.com) - Catherine Duval, the attorney in charge of the Internal Revenue Service’s email production to Congress, has changed jobs: She now manages the State Department’s email production to Congress, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.)  told a hearing of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Thursday, June 25.
Both the IRS and State Department have come under congressional scrutiny over their email production amid suspicions that critical documents may have been withheld or destroyed.
Word that Catherine Duval – also known as Kate Duval -- has worked at both the IRS and the State Department came last Thursday, when Gowdy questioned Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration J. Russell George and Deputy Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration Tim Camus.
“I want to ask you about another name. Have you ever heard of the name Kate Duval?” asked Gowdy.
“Yes sir,” said Camus.
“Who is Kate Duval? Because I think I’ve heard that name before too,” said Gowdy.
“Kate Duval is the chief counsel representative, the IRS’ counselor concerning the production issues to Congress,” said Camus. “She was a lawyer in charge of making sure the counsel made production to Congress.” (The Senate Finance Committee also lists Kate Duval in its timeline of IRS communications with Congress.)
http://www.finance.senate.gov/newsroom/ranking/release/?id=9601b15c-d160-4297-ad68-54fc3a23b760
“So she’s in charge of making sure that emails and other matters get produced,” said Gowdy.
“Yes sir,” said Camus.
“Is she still with the IRS?” asked Gowdy.
“She is not, I don’t recall the date that she left, but she’s no longer,” said Camus.
“Do you know where she is now?” asked Gowdy.
“I can get that information for you,” said Camus.
“No, I know where she is now. She’s at the Department of State, in charge of their email productions,” said Gowdy. “Wow.”
The State Department confirmed to CNSNews.com that Catherine Duval is employed as a senior advisor in the Bureau of Legislative Affairs.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server to conduct government business came to light earlier this year, when the House Oversight Committee requested communications between Clinton and her aides relating to the attack on Americans in Benghazi, Libya.
Since then, Clinton has turned over 55,000 work-related emails to the State Department for review and possible release to the committee.
But questions persist about whether she’s turned over all of the pertinent documents, as she claims she has. The Associated Press reported last week that the State Department cannot find some of Clinton’s work-related emails that were turned over to the House Oversight Committee by one of Clinton’s advisers.
Meanwhile, members of the Oversight Committee last week accused the IRS of destroying some of Lois Lerner’s emails despite a subpoena and an order to preserve them.
“There was a preservation order in place, there’s a subpoena in place, they’ve never complied with it; we’ve had testimony from the IRS commissioner that we would get all this only to find out they’ve been degaussing these tapes and they destroyed evidence,” said Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) at the June 25 hearing.

The Emergence of Orwellian Newspeak and the Death of Free Speech

From John W. Whitehead:

“If you don’t want a man unhappy politically, don’t give him two sides to a question to worry him; give him one. Better yet, give him none. Let him forget there is such a thing as war. If the government is inefficient, top-heavy, and tax-mad, better it be all those than that people worry over it…. Give the people contests they win by remembering the words to more popular songs or the names of state capitals or how much corn Iowa grew last year. Cram them full of noncombustible data, chock them so damned full of ‘facts’ they feel stuffed, but absolutely ‘brilliant’ with information. Then they’ll feel they’re thinking, they’ll get a sense of motion without moving. And they’ll be happy, because facts of that sort don’t change.” ― Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451
How do you change the way people think? You start by changing the words they use.
In totalitarian regimes—a.k.a. police states—where conformity and compliance are enforced at the end of a loaded gun, the government dictates what words can and cannot be used. In countries where the police state hides behind a benevolent mask and disguises itself as tolerance, the citizens censor themselves, policing their words and thoughts to conform to the dictates of the mass mind.
Even when the motives behind this rigidly calibrated reorientation of societal language appear well-intentioned—discouraging racism, condemning violence, denouncing discrimination and hatred—inevitably, the end result is the same: intolerance, indoctrination and infantilism.
It’s political correctness disguised as tolerance, civility and love, but what it really amounts to is the chilling of free speech and the demonizing of viewpoints that run counter to the cultural elite.
As a society, we’ve become fearfully polite, careful to avoid offense, and largely unwilling to be labeled intolerant, hateful, closed-minded or any of the other toxic labels that carry a badge of shame today. The result is a nation where no one says what they really think anymore, at least if it runs counter to the prevailing views. Intolerance is the new scarlet letter of our day, a badge to be worn in shame and humiliation, deserving of society’s fear, loathing and utter banishment from society.
For those “haters” who dare to voice a different opinion, retribution is swift: they will be shamed, shouted down, silenced, censored, fired, cast out and generally relegated to the dust heap of ignorant, mean-spirited bullies who are guilty of various “word crimes.”
We have entered a new age where, as commentator Mark Steyn notes, “we have to tiptoe around on ever thinner eggshells” and “the forces of ‘tolerance’ are intolerant of anything less than full-blown celebratory approval.”
In such a climate of intolerance, there can be no freedom speech, expression or thought.
Yet what the forces of political correctness fail to realize is that they owe a debt to the so-called “haters” who have kept the First Amendment robust. From swastika-wearing Neo-Nazis marching through Skokie, Illinois, and underaged cross burners to “God hates fags” protesters assembled near military funerals, those who have inadvertently done the most to preserve the right to freedom of speech for all have espoused views that were downright unpopular, if not hateful.

Puerto Rico governor says US territory 'can't pay $72bn debt'

Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla speaks to press at his mansion in Puerto Rico - 14 November 2013
Mr Garcia Padilla said creditors must "share the sacrifices" imposed on Puerto Rico's residents
Puerto Rico's governor has said the US territory cannot pay its $72bn (£45bn) debt and is close to defaulting ahead of emergency talks with legislators.
In a TV address on Monday, Alejandro Garcia Padilla said he would seek a moratorium on repayments and form a team to restructure public debts.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest says the US government has ruled out a federal bailout for the US island.
The self-governing US commonwealth has been in a recession since 2006.
Legislators have to approve a $9.8bn budget on Tuesday, which calls for $674m in cuts and sets aside $1.5bn to help pay off the debt.

'Assume sacrifices'

Speaking on Monday evening, Mr Garcia Padilla urged the central authorities to grant Puerto Rico the ability to file for bankruptcy, enabling a postponement of debt payments for several years.
"Even if we increase revenues and cut costs, the magnitude of the problem is such that we would not resolve anything given the weight of the debt we're dragging," the governor warned in a TV address.
"The only way we'll get out of this hole is to join forces and agree, including bondholders, to assume some of the sacrifices."

Governor Garcia Padilla is hoping to negotiate a deal with Puerto Rico's creditors
Puerto Rico is currently not eligible to restructure its debts under US bankruptcy code because it is not a municipality.
According to Reuters, the White House said on Monday it would urge Congress to consider a change in the law that would allow the island to declare bankruptcy.
Mr Garcia Padilla earlier admitted the island was close to an economic "death spiral", in an interview with the New York Times.
A report released by international economists hours before the governor's address gave a blunt assessment of Puerto Rico's fiscal problems, saying its debts were unsustainable and needed to be restructured.

Analysis: Samira Hussain, BBC News, New York

Wall Street used to be confident that Puerto Rico would be able to find a way out of its current financial mess. But that certainty no longer exists.
In saying Puerto Rico cannot pay its $72bn in public debt, the governor has basically told Wall Street that the island is in default. On Monday, Puerto Rican bonds dropped by 12%.
But why should anyone living on America's mainland care about an island with 3.6 million people?
Unlike Greece, where large institutions hold most of its debt, the same is not true for Puerto Rico.
Much of its debt is held by individual investors in the United States, in financial instruments like mutual funds. That exposes more individual Americans to its financial instability.
Puerto Rico must now negotiate with its creditors for some kind of deal. And as we are seeing with Greece, negotiating with creditors can be a long and messy process.
null
Although the island is a US territory whose residents are granted citizenship, it does not have the same status as other states and municipalities.
This means it is unable to file for bankruptcy in the same way that the US city of Detroit, Michigan, did in 2013 if it cannot raise enough money to repay its debts.
The territory's situation has drawn comparisons to Greece, where the government has shut banks and imposed restrictions on cash withdrawals.

Releasing undocumented sex offenders into our neighborhoods is another wonderful gift from out deranged Supreme Court.

Undocumented sex offenders left in Seattle-area neighborhoods without tracking

SEATTLE —
After digging through hundreds of ZIP codes, KIRO 7 found 11 convicted sex offenders in the country illegally living across western Washington neighborhoods.
The government has tried to deport most of these people, but a Supreme Court ruling requires they be released after six months in jail, if their home country won't take them back.
KIRO 7 obtained sources through the Senate Judiciary Committee: a list of every ZIP code in the country that some offender called home at the time of release.
In the Seattle area, sex offenders who are undocumented were dropped off from Tacoma to Bellingham. See a map and list below for a breakdown.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say they can't and don't track where the offenders are after they're released into neighborhoods, documents show.
Mark Krikorian from the Center of Immigration Studies says the government can do more. He wants the State Department to deny visas to countries that won't accept deportations.

Major powers, Iran extend interim deal to July 7 for more talks

VIENNA (Reuters) - Six major powers and Iran have decided to extend an interim nuclear agreement until July 7 to allow more time for negotiations on a final deal, the United States said on Tuesday the deadline for a long-term accord.
"The P5+1 and Iran have decided to extend the measures under the Joint Plan of Action until July 7 to allow more time for negotiations to reach a long-term solution ... on the Iran nuclear issue," Marie Harf, senior adviser for strategic communications at the U.S. State Department, said,
The so-called "P5+1" are the six major powers negotiating with Iran - Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States.

Report: Macon Wal-Mart mob wanted to see how much damage it could do

Surveillance video of a wee-hours ruckus at a Macon Wal-Mart on Sunday shows a teenager race inside flashing gang signs ahead of a mob of four dozen or so people who burst in and smashed merchandise.
The commotion, which caused an estimated $2,000 in damage, appears to have been planned.
Some in the crowd also snatched a man, apparently a shopper at the Zebulon Road store, from a motorized shopping cart and dragged him to the floor, Bibb County sheriff’s officials said Monday.
The vandals, said to number between 40 and 50, sprinted down the store’s main aisle about 1:50 a.m. Sunday, “destroying merchandise displays and items,” a sheriff’s deputy’s report of the incident noted.
Floors in parts of the store were “coated with broken merchandise,” the report added. “The length of the store from front to rear was lined with items which had been shattered, destroyed, turned over and thrown about.”
When sheriff’s deputies got there, the crowd “began to flee into many different vehicles and leave the scene,” the report said.
The store, next to Lowe’s, is just east of Interstate 475 in one of the area’s most frequented shopping districts.
The teenager seen leading the rushing horde of young men and women told a Wal-Mart employee “that this was a planned event ... to see how much damage they could cause,” the sheriff’s report said.
The teen, identified as 17-year-old Kharron Nathan Green, of Ashton Drive in northwest Bibb County, was arrested when he returned to the store to retrieve his cellphone.
Green was jailed and later released on bond after being charged with inciting a riot and second-degree damage to property.
Green, according to the sheriff’s report, first told cops that “he did not know anything about what had happened in the store and that he did not know anyone involved.”
But when his mother and father arrived and watched the surveillance footage with sheriff’s deputies, the report said “Green admitted to his parents that the male in the video was indeed him.”
He refused to name others in the crowd, but according to the report said they had all come from a party on the city’s south side.
“Hopefully we can identify the others,” Sheriff David Davis said Monday. “Hopefully it’s not a pattern of behavior.”
Davis wondered about the parental supervision of the young people involved.
“Due to the lateness of the hour,” he said, “I don’t know that they were going to be going to church the next morning.”

Chicago goes beyond satire into absurdity

They should be carrying their message to their crime ridden neighborhoods. i seriously doubt the people attending or marching in the gay pride celebration were much of a threat to "black lives."

The story said there was gunfire. Who was firing guns? Gangs? Made up of who?

The shirt worn by the lady lower right tells you exactly where the left is next headed. "Blacks out of jail." Since this administration with the help of SCOTUS have destroyed the rule of law and so now moral relativism and tribalism will rule.

BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTESTERS DISRUPT CHICAGO GAY PRIDE PARADE

Chicago Celebrates Gay Pride Parade
AP
Chicago’s 47th annual gay pride parade was disrupted several times by the usual city disruptions — gang activity, gunshots, and drunks — but the event was also disrupted by a car driving into a group of bystanders. Then there was an even larger interruption by “black lives matter” protesters.
Just about every Chicago parade these days features gunfire in the perimeters as gangs clash with police and drunks have probably been a parade disruption since forever. But this year a man tried to drive into the parade route, ramming his car into some bystanders — but not hurting anyone seriously.
Police swarmed the vehicle, smashed in the rear window and yanked out the driver, a middle-aged white man, and arrested him. Chicago police have released no details on the man’s identity nor his motivations for ramming the barricades for the parade.
But by far the biggest disruption was from a large group of “black lives matter” protesters. The group was joined by members of the black queer community of Chicago who announced the disruption on their website.
After noting that they had “purposefully disrupted the Chicago Pride Parade,” the queer group explained their reasoning.
“We do so,” the group said, “because our people are dying at the hands of police, military and state-funded militias around the globe. We do so because we refuse to be tokenized by the same corporations that sponsor state violence, refuse a living wage and profit off our poverty. We do so because young queer people need a better outlet to celebrate themselves than a mire of consumption and sexual violence.”
The queer group was also attacked by the “black lives matter” protesters who held signs and walked as a group to push their own message.
