Surprise! Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is a life-long rabid supporter of communism and the Cuban dictatorship
From our Bureau of Communist Zealots in High Places with some assistance from our Bureau of Socialist Fire Prevention
Is there a connection between Castro, Inc. and the fires that are ravaging Los Angeles? Yes, definitely. Karen Bass, the city’s mayor, has not only visited Cuba numerous times while serving in public office here in the U.S., but also volunteered to harvest sugarcane with the Venceremos Brigade organized by Fidel Castro in 1969, which served as a training program for leftist American agitators, spies, and terrorists.
And when Fidel Castro died in 2016, she whined loudly about what “a great loss to the Cuban people” the passing of their “commander in chief” was. Bass has been savagely criticized for pursuing policies that made Los Angeles more vulnerable to fires with a far-left woke agenda that included cutting millions of dollars from its fire department’s budget.
Socialism/Communism in action, comrade. Undoubtedly, burning down all those multi-million dollar mansions prevents their confiscation, but, hey, this fire is bringing about equity, which is such an important element of social justice.

The city of Los Angeles is burning, and not just from the unprecedented wildfires that have destroyed hundreds of homes, but also due to a growing leadership crisis centered on its mayor, Karen Bass, a controversial figure with ties that directly connect her to Cuba’s communist regime.
Bass maintained close connections with the Venceremos Brigade, an organization backed by Fidel Castro. But what exactly is the Venceremos Brigade, and what role did Bass play within this controversial group?
The Venceremos Brigade is an organization created in the late 1960s with the support of the Cuban regime, facilitating trips for young Americans to Cuba to perform voluntary labor and promote solidarity with the Cuban Revolution. It emerged as a joint initiative between Fidel Castro’s government and sectors of the American radical left, including members of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), a leftist student organization. After SDS dissolved, it gave rise to several groups, including Weather Underground, known for its involvement in violent acts and subversive activities.
The Venceremos Brigade has been described as “one of the Cuban regime’s most ambitious intelligence operations against the United States,” spearheaded by Fidel Castro with a political agenda disguised as humanitarian activism, according to The American Presidency Project. While its official goal was to foster solidarity with Castro’s Cuban Revolution and promote volunteer work, various sources have indicated that its covert mission included recruiting sympathizers in the U.S. to influence American institutions, expand Cuban revolutionary ideology in the region, and ultimately undermine U.S. strategic interests.
An article in Tablet Magazine cited an October 1975 edition of the communist newspaper Daily World, which described Karen Bass as the “leader of the Venceremos Brigade in Southern California.” Additionally, a doctoral dissertation documented that Bass, initially as a brigadista and later as a brigade organizer, visited Cuba every six months during that period.
According to testimony presented to the Senate by three police explosives experts, some members of the Venceremos Brigade reportedly received explosives training during their stays in Cuba, as reported by The New York Times.
Karen Bass, who participated in the Venceremos Brigade in her 20s, made multiple trips to Cuba as a brigadista. Later, as a member of Congress, she visited the island again, citing cultural exchange and studying Cuba’s healthcare system—an aspect she has highlighted in interviews and public statements.
One of Bass’s most significant trips to Cuba occurred in June 2011, funded by the Center for Democracy in the Americas. The purpose of this trip was to meet with individuals identified as scholars, journalists, and NGO representatives on the island. It is worth noting that in Cuba, the regime allows only one NGO per cause or issue to be registered, meaning these organizations are under state control and operate in alignment with its interests.
In December 2014, Bass undertook another trip to Havana, lasting five days, during which she met with medical experts on diabetes. This trip was funded by Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba (MEDICC), an organization dedicated to fostering medical collaboration and academic exchange between Cuba and the U.S.
When she was being considered as a potential running mate for Joe Biden, Cuban-American Senator Marco Rubio remarked: “If, God forbid, Joe Biden is elected president and Congresswoman Bass becomes vice president, she would be the highest-ranking Castro sympathizer in U.S. government history.”
The controversy deepened when, following Fidel Castro’s death, Bass issued a statement referring to him as “Comandante en Jefe,” sparking widespread criticism: “I wish to express my condolences to the people of Cuba and Fidel Castro’s family. The passing of the Comandante en Jefe is a great loss for the people of Cuba. I hope that together, our two nations will continue on the new path of mutual support and collaboration,” she said at the time.
Several U.S. lawmakers, both current and former, have also been linked to the Venceremos Brigade. According to Reason Magazine, notable Democratic Party figures include New York Congressman Gregory Meeks (D), former Massachusetts Congressman Bill Delahunt (D), and former California Congressman Leon Panetta (D), who later served as Secretary of Defense and CIA Director. Additionally, the article notes that other prominent Democrats, such as Senator Chris Dodd (D) and former Senator Tom Harkin (D), also traveled to Cuba with the Venceremos Brigade.
Somah Haaland, daughter of the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland, began collaborating in 2020 with the Pueblo Action Alliance (PAA), an environmental organization based in New Mexico. PAA has advocated before the Department of the Interior to establish moratoriums on mineral extraction in the Chaco region. PAA’s executive director, Julia Bernal, participated in a 2019 trip to Cuba organized by the Venceremos Brigade (VB), according to an investigation by ADN América. Members of PAA have established a branch of the Venceremos Brigade in New Mexico, and Somah Haaland has shared posts on her social media related to these activities. However, there is no public evidence indicating her direct participation in the trips organized by the VB.
