Republican Ralph Norman has won the special election to fill the vacated seat for South Carolina's fifth congressional district.
Norman defeated Democrat Archie Parnell on Tuesday night for the seat vacated by current Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney, the Associated Press reports.
With all precincts reporting, according to the New York Times, Norman won by 51.1 percent to 47.9 percent, a 3.2 percent margin of victory. President Donald Trump won the district by 18 percent in November.
Norman is a real estate developer, who was joined on the campaign trail at times by Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) and former Sen. Jim DeMint (R., S.C.), while Parnell had help from Democratic National Committee chairman Tom Perez.
Democrats had little hope for victory for Parnell, with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spending modestly on his efforts.
