A Bronx woman has been arrested in the murder of her 18-month-old son, who died last year with a fatal cocktail of fentanyl and heroin in his system, police said Wednesday.
Daira Santana-Gonzalez, 23, was charged Friday with murder for the Dec. 27 death of Darwin Gonzalez-Santana, according to authorities.
Santana-Gonzalez was already behind bars at Rikers Island on drug charges from January, city Department of Correction records show.
Darwin was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, but could not be saved, after police responded to a report of an unconscious baby on University Avenue in Morris Heights.
He had no obvious signs of trauma, but investigators found “large quantities” of several kinds of drugs inside the family’s home, police said at the time.
Police ruled his death a homicide in March. In April, the city medical examiner announced the tot had traces of “acute fentanyl, acetylfentanyl, heroin, dextromethorphan, and chlorpheniramine intoxication” in his system at the time of his death.
A spokesperson for the ME’s office also noted no cocaine was found in his system, despite previous reports that indicated otherwise.
Police are still looking for two suspects, including the baby’s father, who investigators believe have fled to the Dominican Republic, law enforcement sources said.
