Sears sliding down to the bottom on a very splintery rail

After all Sears has been through, you’d think it couldn’t get any worse. But now reports from inside the company and from at least one of its vendors say the deconstruction of the once fabled retailer has entered a new – and particularly devastating – stage.
A key vendor, who wished not to be identified because the company still does business with Sears – reported that buyers at the company said 80% of the workforce at Sears Hoffman Estates, IL corporate offices had been laid off last night. It was not possible to establish a number of employees fired but previous reports from vendors who visited the offices said there were vast empty spaces in the offices and hundreds of workers were already long since gone.
What was particularly telling was the suddenness of the move. This vendor said the company had just met with two of the buyers who handled its products earlier this week and now both were gone. This supplier, in the home furnishings area, said after these layoffs the entire merchandising staff for the home area for Sears had been reduced to four buyers and one divisional merchandise manager. This compares to dozens of merchandisers in the past at Sears and more than that at comparable retailers. In the meantime, a long-time employee at an unidentified Sears store in California said they had been told yesterday that their store was closing. It had not been one of the ones Sears management had previously identified as being shut down. This employee said the closing of this store would result in “massive layoffs.”
When former Sears CEO Eddie Lampert convinced a bankruptcy court to allow him to purchase the remaining assets of Sears and continue to operate it, his argument – and the judge’s reasoning – was that Lampert had the best chance to continue to keep open what were then about 400 or so remaining Sears and Kmart locations. Also, to keep its remaining workers – estimated at between 45,000 and 65,000 depending on press reports – employed.
While Sears could not be reached for comment on this latest moves it appears that those commitments continue to be breached and that whatever is left of Sears may in fact be on its last legs. That’s been said numerous times over the past few years but this time it could be really be true.

Social media users joked that racism had been 'solved,' but others say it was an insult

Social media users joked that racism had been 'solved,' but others say it was an insult

Social media is mocking Cadbury's new product, the "Unity Bar," after what it says is a failed attempt to promote diversity.

The bar, which is exclusive to India, was announced for its intent to honor India's Independence Day, which was Aug. 15.

What are the details?

Social media is taking Cadbury to task over its Unity Bar, which features four different kinds of chocolate.
The company released the chocolate in partnership with Ogilvy.
The chocolate in the confection includes dark, "blended," milk, and white, all in one bar, and was aimed to promote unity of "people of different castes, creed, languages, regions and religions."
About its new product, the company tweeted, "This Independence Day, let's celebrate a country that stands united in its diversity. Presenting the Cadbury Unity Bar, India's first chocolate with dark, blended, milk and white chocolate all under one wrap. #CadburyUnityBar #IndependenceDay."
In a statement, Ogilvy said:
India is a diverse country, with people of different castes, creed, languages, regions, religions. Everyone living together, but not always with love. Dairy Milk, which is loved by everyone, wanted to send a powerful message of unity. So we worked with the brand to create the Unity Bar: India's first chocolate made of dark, blended, milk and white chocolate — all united in one bar.

What are people saying about this thing?

A myriad of social media users joked that racism had been "solved" because of Cadbury's new chocolate bar. Other social media users were less lighthearted when talking about the bar, saying that it was an insult.

Here are some of the more interesting responses to Cadbury's latest debut.

Think of how much this illegal five times deported border crosser has cost the murdered girls family and the taxpayer! He is still treated better than you or I.

Her killer was already acquitted on murder charges

The single conviction handed down in the death of Kate Steinle — who was shot to death by an illegal immigrant on a San Francisco pier in 2015 — has been overturned by a California appeals court.

What are the details?

Five-times deported Mexican national Jose Inez Garcia-Zarate admitted to killing Steinle, but claimed it was an accident that occurrent when he inadvertently picked up the firearm he says was wrapped in a t-shirt on the ground and it went off. No one disputes that Garcia-Zarate held the gun that fired the shot that killed Steinle, and no one disputes that the bullet ricocheted off a curb before hitting the 32-year-old woman who was walking with her father.
Prosecutors claimed Garcia-Zarate aimed at Steinle but his ineptitude caused the bullet to ricochete, yet he still hit his target. The defense claims the man held the gun only for a moment, and the entire tragedy was an unfortunate accident.

In November 2017, a jury found Garcia-Zarate not guilty of murder, but did convict him of felony possession of a weapon. That sole conviction was thrown out by the First District Court of Appeal on Friday, the Associated Press reported, "because the judge failed to give the jury the option of acquitting Garcia-Zarate on the theory he only possessed the weapon for a moment."
Garcia-Zarate's lawyer told the outlet that this doesn't mean it's all over — the district attorney has the option of re-trying Garcia-Zarate on that charge, again. "That kind of error causes reversals all the time," said attorney Tony Serra. "Then the prosecution has the prerogative of going again."

Anything else?

Friday's verdict is another blow to the grieving Steinle family, who has fought ever since Kate's death to find justice. Earlier this year, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court's decision to dismiss her loved ones' wrongful death suit against the city of San Francisco for its role in granting "sanctuary" status to her killer.

The all-purpose race card fail

"It has nothing to do with you being black..."

A woman is in big trouble with the cops after pretending to be a cop just for the sake of getting some free snacks from a convenience store in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
Parole officer Brandi Green waited in the car at the QuikTrip gas station as her friend Pektra LaQuiche Edgerton borrowed her badge and gun in order to score some free snacks.
Some convenience stores offer free drinks and snacks to first responders out of respect.
Edgerton was caught, however, when a real police officer in the store saw her use the badge for her ill-gotten snacks, and didn't recognize her as a fellow officer.
When he pulled over her car, she was still wearing the badge and gun, and instead of confessing, she pulled the race card.
"So, because a black person walks into a store with a badge and a gun it's an issue?" Edgerton exclaimed at the officer.

"It has nothing to do with you being black," responded Gwinnett County police officer JT Smith.
Edgerton eventually confessed to pilfering the snacks.
Green was suspended from her job at the Department of Community Supervision and she resigned after an investigation into her conduct was opened.
Edgerton was charged with impersonation of a law enforcement officer.
Reports were unclear as to what happened to the snacks.

Here's the video of the bizarre arrest:

Investigators seize enough fentanyl to kill 14 million people in massive drug bust

"Terwilliger said that most fentanyl comes from Chinese labs. There's been an increased effort to hold China accountable for drugs like fentanyl that are manufactured there and smuggled to the U.S. A bipartisan bill in the Senate would sanction Chinese labs and traffickers that export the drug."

Iranian oil tanker now bound for Lebanon

A day after the Iranian oil-laden supertanker Adrian Darya 1 made a complete u-turn just as it made its way into Turkish territorial waters, Turkey has denied that it will enter port there; instead, top Turkish officials say it is bound for Lebanon.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Friday the tanker and its 2 million barrels of oil are headed to "the main port in Lebanon,"as reported by Reuters.

It has changed course several times since being released by UK/Gibraltar custody weeks ago, and now appears to be circling in waters west of Cyprus.
Interestingly, in all the maneuvering it has actually come in the vicinity of its original suspected destination for which it was accused of busting EU sanctions in the first place, the Syrian port of Baniyas:
According to Refinitiv tracking data, the Adrian Darya, formerly called Grace 1, made a U-turn on Friday and headed for Turkey's Iskenderun port - 200 km (124 miles) north of Syria's Baniyas refinery, the tanker's suspected original destination.
