A Massachusetts man and his girlfriend are happy to be alive after allegedly being ambushed by a group of four illegal immigrants during an evening walk last week.
The incident reportedly began after a man approached the couple and offered them beer. Moments later, three more men showed up and it became clear that they were in immediate danger.
One of the men reportedly took out a condom and gestured at the woman as another allegedly grabbed her by the hood of her sweatshirt and began dragging her away, while the largest man out of the group detained her boyfriend, according to police.
The woman was allegedly raped while her boyfriend was beaten and threatened with death.
The boyfriend was somehow able fight off his attackers and to force his way into the barricaded apartment. Police said the boyfriend was already calling 911 when two of the men left the his girlfriend to try to subdue him.
One of the suspects allegedly head-butted the boyfriend several times before grabbing a large chef’s knife and attempting to slash him, but was stopped by one of his accomplices, police said.
That’s when the boyfriend smashed the knife-wielder with a beer bottle, police said. He then ran to the bed where his girlfriend was held down and helped her escape.
“After we got out, we got down to the street and she was screaming, ‘Police! Police!’ and I was like, ‘Don’t stop, just keep running,’” he told the Herald. Police arrived shortly after and arrested all four suspects, also retrieving the boyfriend’s missing cellphone and clothing the woman told them the alleged attackers wore in the apartment where two of the suspects live.
It later emerged that all of the suspects were illegal immigrants.
The boyfriend, still shaken by the attack, told the Herald Friday that he and his girlfriend are struggling to process the heinous assault.
“I thought we were going to die. I really did,” he told the Herald. “And I didn’t care if I died as long as I could save her and get her out of there, that’s all I cared about.”
“I’ve lived (in Framingham, Massachusetts) my whole life and I never imagined anything like this could happen just walking down the street,” he added. “The worst part was I felt like I couldn’t do anything.”
All four of the alleged attackers have pleaded not guilty and were held pending dangerousness hearings, according to court filings.
Federal immigration officials have since requested detainers on the four suspects, all illegal aliens.
Two of the men had previously been deported to Guatemala, Immigration and
Customs Enforcement spokesman Shawn Neudauer told the Herald.
Elmer Diaz, 19, was charged with rape, assault with a dangerous weapon, kidnapping and threatening to commit a crime. His older brother, Ariel Diaz, 24, was charged with unarmed robbery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, indecent assault and battery, kidnapping and witness intimidation.
Ariel was deported to Guatemala in May 2014 after convictions for drunken driving and disorderly conduct, according to Neudauer.
A third brother, Adan Diaz, 32, and Marlon Josue Jarquin-Felipe, 27, were both charged with indecent assault and battery and kidnapping. All four of the alleged assailants are from Guatemala. Jarquin-Felipe was deported back to his homeland in April 2014, Neudauer said.
Neudauer added that Ariel Diaz was also arrested last winter on a drunken driving charge. ICE was not notified of that case, he added.
Neudauer told the Herald Friday that ICE is “closely monitoring the cases and has placed detainers on all four” illegal immigrants.
In the recent case, the female victim’s boyfriend was beaten while his girlfriend was held down on a bed and raped the evening of March 13, authorities said.
