Bill Maher, liberal host of HBO’s “Real Time,” admitted on his show Friday that he hates President Donald Trump so much that he is “hoping” for another crippling economic recession.

What did he say?

During a panel discussion, which largely centered around all things Trump, Maher noted the booming economy, which he said is not necessarily good for anti-Trump Americans like himself.
“Could I ask about the economy? Because this economy is going pretty well,” Maher said.
Panelist Shermichael Singleton, also a Republican consultant, chuckled off-screen to Maher’s comment.
“What? Why was that funny?” Maher asked.
“It is going well — for now,” Singleton responded.
“For now, right, thank you, that’s my question. I feel like the bottom has to fall out at some point,” Maher explained.
“And by the way, I’m hoping for it. Because I think one you get rid of Trump is a crashing economy. So please, bring on the recession. Sorry if that hurts people, but it’s either root for a recession or you lose your democracy,” he added.
Instead of questioning the remark, Maher’s panelists continued the discussion — and the Trump bashing. The crowd also reacted warmly to Maher’s abhorrent comment.

Why are economic recessions so bad?

In addition to the economic side-effects of a recession, severe economic downturns, like the U.S. experienced in 2007 and 2008, kill lots of people and leave lasting residual effects for many years afterward.
In fact, one study directly tied more than 10,000 suicides to the Great Recession. However, another study discovered overall mortality rates dipped during the economic downturn.
