Risk takers
Jessi Combs -- driver, builder, welder, television personality and #fastestwomanonfourwheels -- died yesterday in an accident while driving a jet-powered car in the Alvord Desert in Oregon. Combs was 36.
She was planning to break her own record of 398 mph in a four-wheeled vehicle and managed to hit 483.227 mph on a shakedown run last year before mechanical problems arose. According to news reports, the Harney County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call shortly after 4 p.m. yesterday, reporting a crash on the dry lake bed.
Terry Madden, a member of Combs’ team, confirmed the accident this morning on Instagram.
Combs could be seen on “Overhaulin’,” “All Girls Garage” and served as a host of “Mythbusters” for a time. She was trained at WyoTech as a collision, refinishing and fabrication specialist and was top of her class. She also competed in a wide range of off-road events including King of the Hammers, Baja 1000 and Rallye Aicha des Gazelles, the world’s only all-female rally race.
