Kamala Harris and other Democrats introduce resolution to condemn terms 'Chinese Virus' and 'Wuhan Virus'

They blame the rhetoric for hate crimes

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and a group of other Democratic senators introduced a resolution calling for the condemnation of the use of terms such as "Chinese Virus" or "Wuhan Virus" to describe COVID-19.

The resolution ties the use of such terms to acts of violence or discrimination carried out against Asian Americans over the past several months.
The resolution "calls on all public officials to condemn and denounce anti-Asian sentiment in any form" and "condemns all manifestations or expressions of racism, xenophobia, discrimination, anti-Asian sentiment, scapegoating, and ethnic or religious intolerance."
The novel coronavirus that caused a pandemic that has killed more than 300,000 people worldwide originated in Wuhan, China. Some theorize that it was transmitted to humans from bats in a Wuhan outdoor wet market, while others suspect it may have been spread by way of an accidental transmission at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
The Chinese government attempted to cover up the uncontrolled spread of the virus in the early days after it was discovered, and it has likely underreported the true number of Chinese residents who died from it. The Chinese communist government has since tried to blame the United States for the virus.

Harris's resolution points out that Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, agreed that the use of the term "Chinese coronavirus" was wrong and inappropriate.
A number of mainstream media outlets referred to the virus by its geographical origins in stories and segments before the virus spread throughout the world. Once it became a severe issue in the U.S., sentiment on the use of terms such as "Chinese coronavirus" changed abruptly.
Numerous diseases have been named after the location where they originated, such as Ebola or Zika in recent memory. The 1918 influenza pandemic is still commonly referred to as the Spanish flu.

Meghan Murphy, Canadian feminist and journalist, revealed Thursday that Twitter temporarily suspended her account for what they considered to be her “hateful conduct.”

Her “crime?” Saying that “men aren’t women” in a discussion with other Twitter users.

What are the details?

Revealing Twitter’s apparent bias, Murphy wrote, wrote, “This is f***ing bulls**t @twitter. I’m not allowed to say that men aren’t women or ask questions about the notion of transgenderism at all anymore? That a multi billion dollar company is censoring BASIC FACTS and silencing people who ask questions about this dogma is INSANE.”

Murphy is an outspoken feminist who has been opposed to a Canadian bill that would make gender identity and expression part of the law.

Murphy later added, “What ARE we allowed to say here??? How tf is simply saying ‘men aren’t women’ hateful??? I am losing my godd**ned mind over this. Enjoy your brave new world, sjws. Here’s your f***ing social justice.”

“I’m assuming my account is going to get locked again simply for speaking about this,” she added. “But this is not f***ing ok and I’m not going to let it go silently.”

Murphy went on to reveal that trans activists have been targeting her online for her outspoken notion that women simply don’t have penises.

“Trans activists have been targeting my account for a few months now,” she wrote. “Either someone at Twitter or with an in at Twitter has been combing through old tweets and reporting them for ‘hateful conduct.’ Twitter seems to instantly shut my account down without a second thought.”

Murphy went on to question if Twitter was attempting to ban all users with similar opinions, or if just she was a target for suspension.

“Are you going to ban every single user on here who says ‘men aren’t women’?? Actually??? @Twitter Or are you just going out of your way to specifically silence ME?” Murphy complained.

Murphy appeared before the Canadian Senate in 2017 to voice her opposition to the proposed legislation, Bill C-16.

“Treating gender as though it is either internal or a personal choice is dangerous and completely misunderstands how and why women are oppressed under patriarchy as a class of people,” Murphy said in her remarks in front of the Senate. “The rights of women and girls are being pushed aside to accommodate a trend.”

Reps from up to a dozen of the US's biggest tech companies plan to meet in San Francisco to discuss efforts to counter manipulation of their platforms.

Representatives from a host of the biggest US tech companies, including Facebook and Twitter, have scheduled a private meeting for Friday to share their tactics in preparation for the 2018 midterm elections.

Last week, Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, invited employees from a dozen companies, including Google, Microsoft, and Snapchat, to gather at Twitter’s headquarters in downtown San Francisco, according to an email obtained by BuzzFeed News.

“As I’ve mentioned to several of you over the last few weeks, we have been looking to schedule a follow-on discussion to our industry conversation about information operations, election protection, and the work we are all doing to tackle these challenges,” Gleicher wrote.

The meeting, the Facebook official wrote, will have a three-part agenda: each company will present the work they’ve been doing to counter information operations; there will be a discussion period for problems each company faces; and a talk about whether such a meeting should become a regular occurrence.

In May, nine of those companies met at Facebook to discuss similar problems, alongside two US government representatives, Department of Homeland Security Under Secretary Chris Krebs and Mike Burham from the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force, created in November. Attendees left the meeting discouraged that they received little information from the government.

Tech companies, Facebook and Twitter in particular, have faced intense scrutiny for how slowly they initially reacted to reports that foreign intelligence and affiliated operations used their platforms to manipulate users ahead of the 2016 election, leading to drops in user confidence and a threat of regulation from lawmakers.

In February, special counsel Robert Mueller’s office charged 13 people affiliated with Russia’s Internet Research Agency — a “troll factory” where employees created personas across multiple platforms — with breaking laws in order to influence American voters. Since then, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr, and YouTube have each had at least one public purge of accounts believed to be foreign influence operations.

The meeting highlights tech companies’ recent efforts to be more proactive with governments’ use of their sites to achieve political goals. Several companies have announced operations this week where they partnered with other organizations to address such problems.

On Tuesday, Microsoft announced that it had, for the 12th time since 2016, legally acquired control of a handful of web domains registered by Russian military intelligencefor phishing operations, then shut them down. The next day, after receiving a tip from the threat intelligence company FireEye, Facebook and Twitter announced they had taken down a network of fake news sites and spoofed users meant to create sympathy for the Iranian government’s worldview. Google made a similar announcement about YouTube on Thursday.

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau publicly corrects woman for not using gender-inclusive language

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau interrupted a woman at a town hall last week in British Columbia because she didn’t use a politically correct term.

What happened?

During the event, Trudeau took a question from a woman who identified herself with the World Mission Society Church of God. She asked about Canadian religious volunteer regulations and whether the government could loosen them. The regulations center on volunteer versus “charitable” work, the latter requiring a work visa in Canada.

The unidentified parishioner called the regulations “extremely difficult.”

“That’s why in actuality, we cannot do free volunteering to help our neighbors in need as we truly desire,” she explained. “So that’s why we came here today, to ask you to also look into the policies that religious charitable organizations have in our legislation so that it can also be changed because maternal love is the love that is going to change the future of mankind. So we’d like you to—”

That’s when Trudeau interrupted the woman.

“We like to say ‘peoplekind,’ not necessarily ‘mankind,’ because it’s more inclusive,” he corrected.

The crowd immediately burst into applause and cheers over the correction, even the questioner affirmed the politically correct rebuke.

“We can all learn from each other,” Trudeau explained.

Is this the norm in Canada?

Yes. The Canadian government in recent years has made a push to move away from non-gender-inclusive language to language that is completely gender-neutral. Last week, the country even voted to make its national anthem, “O Canada,” general-neutral.

The bill changed the second line of the anthem from “true patriot love, in all thy sons command” to “in all of us command.”

University will host dinners as part of ‘racial reconciliation’ program

To promote “racial reconciliation” after the deadly clashes between white nationalists and counterprotesters in Charlottesville last month, Brown University plans to offer segregated events to its black students and female Muslim students.

The university received a $30,000 grant from the Association of American Colleges and Universities, which represents liberal arts schools, to create a campus center whose mission is to “break down racial hierarchies and create a positive narrative about race in the community,” according to The Brown Daily Herald.

These grants, provided with the assistance of the Newman’s Own Foundation and W.K. Kellogg Foundation, will go towards hosting racially and religiously segregated “dinner discussion groups.” These discussions are being led by Brown University Chaplain Rev. Janet Cooper Nelson, who told The Daily that “one [group will be] for black students and the other [will be for] for Muslim women on campus.”

Nelson told The Daily she hopes that the Muslim women’s dinner group will “allow the women to engage in topics such as the intersection of race, Islam and gender fluidity.”

Nelson did not respond to The College Fix’s request for comment, nor did Brown’s media relations department.

The Fix also reached out to the university’s Black Student Union for comment on the black student discussion dinner. The group did not respond.

The Association of American Colleges and Universities has charged Brown and nine other universities with “addressing the historic and contemporary effects of racism and leading transformative change,” according to a press release from Brown.

The initiative seeks to “educate, prepare and inspire the next generation of leaders to advance justice and build equitable communities.”

According to The Daily, the American Association of Colleges and Universities will host the inaugural “Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Institute” this January in Washington, D.C. Representatives from the ten chosen campuses will attend the institute in order to “develop transformative action plans to advance racial healing,” AACU spokeswoman Anne Jenkins told The Fix via email.

Recent years have seen an increased push for segregated spaces and events on campuses across the country.

Last spring, Harvard hosted its first-ever blacks-only student graduation ceremony; a number of other universities hosted similar segregated graduation events. Last winter, students at the University of Michigan demanded a “no-whites-allowed space.” A year ago California State University’s Los Angeles campus offered segregated housing for black students.

And in May, American University barred white students from a cafe in order to create a “sanctuary” for nonwhite students, a demand the provost of the university called “reasonable.”
