Trump Pressure Leads Tennessee Valley Authority Officials to Review CEO’s $8M Salary

Officials with the federally-owned Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) say they are reviewing CEO Jeff Lyash’s $8 million salary following scrutiny from President Trump.
This month, Trump came down hard on TVA executives for their plan to outsource American workers’ jobs to imported H-1B foreign workers by contracting with outsourcing firms such as Capgemini, CGI, and Accenture.
In an executive order, Trump demanded that TVA and all other federal agencies review their job and hiring practices to ensure that they are not displacing American workers in any way. As part of that order, Trump said he wants Lyash’s huge salary lowered immensely to no more than $500,000 a year.
“But the new CEO must be paid no more than $500,000 a year, which is still a significant amount more than the President of the United States makes,” Trump said in a meeting with American TVA workers on August 3. Trump added:
So let this serve as a warning to any federally appointed board. If you betray American workers, then you will hear two simple words: ‘You’re fired. You’re fired.’ It’s ridiculous. The man is getting $8 million. It’d be interesting to see how much money he made before this.
The salary makes Lyash the highest-paid federal employee in the nation.
Now, the pressure from Trump has warranted a review of Lyash’s salary, according to newly-appointed TVA Chair John Ryder. The former chair, Skip Thompson, was fired by Trump because of the plans to outsource U.S. jobs.
“It’s a lot of money,” Ryder told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. “And we’re going to be looking at that and looking at … what is the best way to do this? To handle the compensation and to structure the compensation so that we can resolve some of these tensions.”
Already, Trump’s intervention in TVA’s plan to outsource U.S. jobs has resulted in the agency vowing to stop the plan in its tracks and rehire the roughly 200 American workers who were in the process of training their foreign H-1B visa worker replacements.
The TVA board controls the salary and hiring of its CEO. Former TVA CEO Bill Johnson earned a similar salary of more than $8 million a year before he retired.

Nurses give inside look at ‘nightmare’ NYC-run adult-care center
Out-of-state nurses brought to Manhattan to fight the coronavirus say they found hellish conditions at the city-run adult-care center on Roosevelt Island — from patients with horrific bed sores to feces-smeared walls.
“It was just heartbreaking,” said one of the RNs, a mom of four from Wisconsin who spent about 17 days at the Coler Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center.
“Patients were in deplorable conditions — very, very dirty, bed sores, terrible odors,’’ the FEMA-contracted nurse, 38, told The Post.
“During my shift, I was placing my initials on the adult diapers. When I would return the next day, the patients would have an additional adult diaper on over the one with my initials on it, saturated urine through both and through the sheets.’’
She and several other nurses, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they tended to coronavirus patients in the facility’s long-term-care section.
The virus-sickened patients were already living at the site when the nurses arrived and not among the COVID-19 sufferers who were ordered sent to the facility by Mayor Bill de Blasio because of a shortage of hospital beds amid the pandemic. The patients brought in from the outside were put in a separate wing of the site that had been closed.
There have been 11 confirmed coronavirus deaths and one presumed fatal case at the center so far, the state Health Department said.
One of the FEMA-contracted nurses, who is from Iowa, described feces-smeared and vermin- and roach-infested areas at the facility — and said she even found cockroaches “on a patient in a vegetative state.
“The conditions at Coler went beyond poor nursing care and crossed clearly into criminal negligence and dependent-adult abuse,’’ the RN told The Post.
The 34-year-old mom said there were “food and feces smeared on patients’ beds, walls, tray tables and curtains,’’ while “basic nursing cares [were] not met, including [patient] turns, diaper changes.’’
The Wisconsin nurse said it would take her “at least three packages [of wipes] for every patient to clean their groin area” because they were so dirty.
“Patients were flinching when doing basic cares, putting their arms up in self-defense due to they were in fear of being hit,” she claimed.
Meanwhile, the “ ‘clean’ med room was infested with mice, and ‘clean’ supplies, medication and food were contaminated with mice feces and urine,” the Iowa nurse added.
“Cleaning services said that because of the pandemic, they can’t keep up. [But] it’s very apparent that this entire place was neglected for cleaning for a very long time, not due to the pandemic.’’
And the nurses said forget about keeping COVID-19 patients properly isolated at the site, which is run by the city’s Health + Hospitals Corp.
“Residents were kept for days in group rooms after found to be COVID-positive,’’ the Iowa nurse said.
The Wisconsin caregiver added, “Immediately following [COVID]-positive patients being removed from a room, they would put a negative COVID patient into that place and did not clean the room that they were removed from.”
The Iowa nurse said a manager for the FEMA-contracted agency she worked for brought their concerns to higher-ups — only to be abruptly taken off the job.
A state DOH rep told The Post that “given nature of the complaints,” an “extensive investigation is under way.”
But HHC denied the nurses’ claims to The Post, saying the facility was last inspected by the state Department of Health in November and “found to be in substantial compliance with federal and state regulations.
“NYC Health + Hospitals provides the highest quality care to our patients, ensuring their health and safety always comes first,’’ it added in a statement.
“Any claims of neglect and abuse are simply false, highly disturbing and do not reflect our standards of care.”
But state Assemblywoman Rebecca Seawright, whose district includes Roosevelt Island, called the nurses’ reports “outrageous and intolerable.
“The New York state Health Department must investigate and require that these reported conditions be immediately resolved and that patients at risk be transferred if need be to a safe environment,’’ she told The Post in a statement.

Carranza blasts councilman tending to sick mom for being late to meeting
Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza angrily scolded a City Council member for being late to a virtual public hearing, ignoring the elected official’s explanation that he was tending to his ailing 96-year-old mother.
Carranza’s outburst, which came during a meeting of the advisory Panel for Educational Policy on Thursday, recalled the time he walked out of a Queens district meeting when parents complained their children were physically and sexually assaulted. He later accused the parents of “grandstanding.”
This time, Carranza blew up at Queens lawmaker Robert Holden, who was not logged in to the video meeting when called upon about 7:30 p.m.
“I had a number of issues to handle tonight including my mother in a nursing home fighting for her life and may have COVID,” Holden explained when he was finally called upon two hours later.
Holden then criticized the chancellor’s recent comment to school leaders — “Never waste a good crisis,” as reported in The Post.
That comment “was an insult to everyone fighting COVID,” Holden said. “That comment was disgraceful, and he should apologize for it.”
Holden also disagreed with the Department of Education’s new K-to-8 grading policy, which rates students only as “meeting standards” or “needs improvement.”
The councilman said the policy did not reward effort or excellence, and that many constituents have told him they want the DOE to keep numeric grading.
Carranza then burst in, saying he normally doesn’t speak during the public comment period, but wanted to “clarify the record.”
“Had he been present at the start of the meeting … ,” Carranza began.
“I was dealing with my mother’s situation,” Holden interjected. “Don’t insult me.”
Holden’s microphone was then muted.
“Had the councilman been present at the start of this meeting … ,” Carranza repeated, refusing to acknowledge Holden’s explanation.
Carranza said Holden missed his clarification about the “wasting a crisis” comment. He said the school system had fed a million people, “bridged the digital divide” by loaning out iPads, and built the capacity for remote learning.
“It’s unfortunate that politics are taking over,” Carranza said. “This council member consistently, consistently persists on politics. I will not stand for it.”
Yet again, Carranza chided Holden, a college professor and registered Democrat, for being “three hours late” to the meeting.
“Stop the ad hominen attacks and get on board and help us serve our community,” Carranza ended his rant.
“We will not have a back and forth and I will not respond again.”
Holden told The Post that when he was called on to speak earlier in the meeting, he was parked at a nursing home awaiting an ambulance bringing his mother from the hospital, where she had been treated for five days. His mom tested negative for COVID-19, but was suffering from a COVID-like fever and difficulty breathing.
When he learned the ambulance would be delayed, Holden returned home. But the nursing home called to ask a series of questions to prepare his mother for admittance. He was then finally able to log into the PEP meeting, after missing an hour, but was denied a chance to speak. He was finally called on about 9:30 p.m.
Holden sent a letter to Mayor de Blasio on Friday complaining about Carranza’s “unprofessional and disrespectful conduct,” and his lack of toughness necessary for surviving in New York City.
“Sadly, this outburst from the Chancellor is far from the first time he has disgracefully mishandled public criticism,” the letter says. It notes the time Carranza walked out of the public meeting when parents raised concerns about alleged assaults in schools, and when he publicly feuded with Rep. Grace Meng and state Sen. John Liu when they criticized his treatment of the Asian community.
“He also accused Meng of playing politics, which is one of his recurring excuses,” Holden said.
Carranza spokeswoman Miranda Barbot would not explain why Carranza ignored Holden’s explanation that he was late because his mother was sick.
“Our thoughts are with the council member and his family during this difficult time,” she said. “After he missed several calls for comment, we were happy to give him the floor. It’s unfortunate he chose to use that time to attack rather than offer constructive feedback. As the chancellor said, let’s put politics aside and focus on our students.
“Our grading policy was developed with feedback from parents and educators and holds students to high standards while taking into account the extraordinary challenges many are facing at home.”

Police in Westport, Conn., said they will be testing a "pandemic drone" that can scan the body temperatures of residents to determine if they have fevers or other health symptoms in an effort to combat the coronavirus.
Aerospace company Draganfly announced in a news release the drones will be equipped with a specialized sensor and computer vision systems that can display heart and respiratory rates. They can also detect people coughing in crowds, police said.
“One of the major problems for cities and towns like Westport in managing and responding to a pandemic like the COVID-19 virus, is finding out who could be infected and how widespread the disease has spread,” said Westport First Selectman, Jim Marpe. “One way to do this is to look for underlying symptoms."
Westport is located in Fairfield County, which is considered the epicenter for the virus outbreak in Connecticut. It's the state's closest county to New York City and has almost half of Connecticut's 20,360 confirmed cases, according to data from Johns Hopkins.
Police said the goal of the program is to provide better health monitoring support for potential at-risk groups, including the elderly or those with preexisting health conditions.
Police also plan to monitor how residents are social distancing in public areas where groups may be congregating, including beaches, train stations, parks, and shopping centers. The technology can detect certain infectious conditions from 190-feet away, the release added.

“The Westport Police Department along with first responders around the world are looking for effective ways to ease the spread of COVID-19 and keep their communities safe,” said Westport Chief of Police, Foti Koskinas.
“This technology not only enhances the safety of our officers and the public, but the concept of using drones remains a go-to technology for reaching the most remote areas with little to no manpower needed."
The drone technology is being tested by the Westport Police Department as a part of their “Flatten the Curve Pilot Program."
Due to potential privacy concerns, police said the drone won't go into individual private yards and it doesn't employ facial recognition technology.
