NEW YORK (AP) — The late Aretha Franklin’s family said Monday that it found an Atlanta pastor’s eulogy delivered at the Queen of Soul’s funeral last week to be offensive and distasteful.
The eulogist, the Rev. Jasper Williams Jr., was criticized for a political address that described children being in a home without a father as “abortion after birth” and said black lives do not matter unless blacks stop killing each other. Franklin’s funeral was on Friday.
“He spoke for 50 minutes and at no time did he properly eulogize her,” said Vaughn Franklin, the late singer’s nephew, who said he was delivering a statement for the family.
Franklin said that his aunt never asked Williams to eulogize her, since she didn’t talk about plans for her own funeral. The family selected Williams because he has spoken at other family memorials in the past, most prominently at the funeral for Franklin’s father, minister and civil rights activist C.L. Franklin, 34 years ago.
Williams has not backed down from anything he said at the funeral, and said he respects the family’s opinion. “I understand it,” he said. “I regret it. But I’m sorry they feel that way.”
Besides a social media uproar, Williams heard resistance at the funeral itself. Singer Stevie Wonder yelled out “black lives matter” after the pastor said, “No, black lives do not matter” during his eulogy.
Williams had minimized the Black Lives Matter movement because of black-on-black crime. “Black lives must not matter until black people start respecting black lives and stop killing ourselves.”
He also said “there are not fathers in the home no more” and said that a black woman cannot raise a black boy to be a man. Some people suggested that was disrespectful of Aretha Franklin, a single mother of four boys.
His eulogy “caught the entire family off guard,” Vaughn Franklin said. The family had not discussed what Williams would say in advance, he said.
“It has been very, very distasteful,” he said.
He said it was unfortunate because everyone else who participated in the ceremony was very respectful.
(JTA) — The Boycott, Divest and Sanctions campaign against Israel has been categorized as anti-Semitic by the Berlin State Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
In its annual report for 2017, released last week, the office – which monitors anti-democratic activities across the political spectrum in Berlin – describes the BDS campaign as a loosely organized movement, segments of which “question Israel’s right to exist and accuse Israel entirely of racism.”
The report “refers to a grey area” between “legitimate criticism of Israeli politics to anti-Zionist anti-Semitism,” and bases its understanding of anti-Semitism on the working definition proposed by Independent Expert Group on Anti-Semitism of the German Bundestag, and adopted last April.
It comes almost exactly a year after Berlin Mayor Michael Müller joined with Josef Schuster, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, to announce plans to block the use of city venues and funds for events by groups that support the Israel boycott movement. Berlin became the third city, after Munich and Frankfurt, to declare plans to stymie such activities.
A diversity drive is spreading across the city as 78 schools in 14 of the city’s 32 community districts now boast plans that will give admission priority to predominantly black and Hispanic kids — and more schools will soon follow, a Post analysis found.
The patchwork of plans, while still limited in scope — the city has 1,800 schools — amounts to the biggest de-segregation movement in Big Apple schools since the late-1950s Civil Rights era, when there was an abortive program to bus black kids from Bedford-Stuyvesant and East Harlem to white areas in Queens, a top scholar said.
“I cannot think of any other time where there have been such efforts to try to alter the racial or ethnic makeup of New York City schools,” said Stephan Brumberg, a professor emeritus of education history at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center.
A landmark 2014 UCLA study found NYC public schools the nation’s most racially segregated, with black and Latino students concentrated in public schools with less than 10 percent white enrollment.
Citywide, the current racial breakdown of NYC’s public-school students is 41 percent Hispanic, 26 percent black, 16 percent Asian, 15 percent white, and 2 percent “mixed.”
Last year, 49 schools were on board the city Department of Education’s “Diversity in Admissions” pilot initiative, offering a variety of pre-K to high-school seats to English-language learners and kids from low-income families, in the child-welfare system, or with parents in jail.
The DOE could not say Friday how last year’s offers affected enrollment in the school year that starts Wednesday, saying the data won’t be finalized until fall.
This year, another 29 schools have joined the initiative, with admission policies affecting kids entering schools in 2019-20.
New schools Chancellor Richard Carranza has embraced diversity efforts more aggressively than Mayor de Blasio, who hired him.
Within two months on the job, Carranza green-lighted a controversial plan in District 3 on the Upper West Side to reserve 25 percent of seats in 16 middle schools for low-income students with low test scores and grades. Carranza fueled the fire when he retweeted a news headline that blasted “white, wealthy parents” who were angry that their kids might be shut out of the best schools.
Carranza is now poised to approve a far more ambitious plan that has divided parents in Brooklyn’s District 15, including affluent neighborhoods like Park Slope. It will eliminate all academic-based admission criteria at 16 middle schools — and reserve 52 percent of seats for low-income, English-learning and homeless applicants.
Some Park Slope parents have told The Post the schools should keep some admission criteria, but fear speaking up lest they be painted as a “racist from 1950s Alabama,” as one mom put it.
Other parents have pushed for the plan. Lauren Gropp Lowry, a white stay-at-home mom with a second grader at high-performing PS 321, said the current system lets schools cherry-pick kids.
“It’s further sorting and segregating our children in a city that’s too segregated,” she said. “The highest performers end up at just a few schools, and that breeds a sense of entitlement in children and parents. But the highest-performing students are not always the hardest working.”

In a statement to The Post, Carranza said, “I’m encouraged to see more school communities across the city working to reduce barriers and integrate schools. As we move forward, we’ll need a combination of top-down and bottom-up approaches to increase access, and have more diverse schools that deliver equity and excellence for all students.”
The Center for New York City Affairs, which plans to release a detailed study on the diversity plans this month, has spotted flops as well as successes.
“Many schools are meeting their goals, some have barely moved the needle, and some are going in the opposite direction,” said Nicole Mader, senior research fellow at The New School think tank.
For instance, District 1’s East Side Community School in the East Village, which serves grades 6-12, agreed last year to offer 62 percent of its seats to low-income kids entering 6th grade. It exceeded that goal, enrolling 63 percent. But it actually slid from the prior year, 2016-17, when 65 percent of its students were low-income.
“They’ve gone down, but still met their goal,” Mader said.
In another odd case, the grade 9-12 Williamsburg Preparatory School, in District 14, volunteered to offer “up to 62 percent” of freshmen seats to low-income students in 2018-19. But in 2017-18 the school already had 86 percent low-income students.
Among successes, Brooklyn Arts and Science Elementary School in Crown Heights, in District 17, had 7 percent of Kindergarten students learning to speak English in 2015-16. It set a goal to admit 20 percent the next year. It fell short, but still doubled English-learners to 15 percent.
Overall, Mader said the burgeoning diversity push has potential, but at the current scale and with glitches, “it won’t have much of an impact on the city’s segregation crisis.”
None of the current diversity plans call for racial quotas in light of a 2007 US Supreme Court ruling that struck down Seattle’s use of race in admissions. The targeted NYC kids, however, are mostly minority.
The New School researchers warn that the DOE plans don’t do much to encourage middle-income families to switch from popular schools to higher-poverty schools.
“Based on the way more privileged families exert choice, they may not want to be pushed into a school they deem undesirable,” Mader said.
Brumberg, the professor, agreed. But while upper-income parents might opt for private schools, families that can’t afford the pricey tuitions may wind up fleeing the city.
“This could be the straw that will break their back, and they will simply leave,” he said.
His request for asylum was rejected in February 2017 but he was not immediately deported.

The victim's father David V said he and his family initially welcomed Abdul Mobin D 'like a son' as 'otherwise he would have had nobody', but adds that he always doubted his age.
'He is never in a million years 15-years-old. We hope that through the procedure [age test] that we will now know his true age."
The defense attorney played by John Travolta in the TV docudrama “The People Vs. O.J. Simpson” was in a San Francisco courtroom on Friday, outdoing himself in The People Vs. Chahal.
Robert Shapiro had this to say about tech start-up princeling Gurbaksh Chahal, who now faced six months of actual jail time after a domestic violence charge while on probation for an earlier attack. A surveillance camera recorded him with startling clarity pummeling and kicking his then girlfriend 117 times. The woman in the first attack had survived even though the video also shows Chahal smothering her with a pillow with such determination that it was deemed a deadly weapon.
“I don’t know anyone who has been punished more than he has in this case,” Shapiro actually said of his client to the court on Friday.
Shapiro asked that Chahal be spared jail altogether and placed under house arrest. Judge Tracie Brown did not fail to note that Chahal’s penthouse bedroom was the scene of the initial attack as well as a second incident in which Chahal is alleged to have repeatedly kicked a woman.
“It is ironic that you’re asking me to sentence him to the place where the crimes were committed,” Brown observed.
Not one to be shamed into silence, Shapiro suggested Chahal could instead be confined in mommy and daddy’s home. Chabal played the remorseful little boy, turning tearful as he pleaded with the judge for even more leniency than he had already wrangled.
“The truth is, I’m not a bad person,” Chahal said. “I desperately need my freedom… Please reconsider… I’m begging you to have mercy on me, your honor, please.”Shapiro asked that his client at least be allowed time to make arrangements in his businesses and personal life, as if this were some victimless offense. The judge ordered Chahal be remanded immediately. The sobbing 36-year-old princeling of Silicon Valley who likes to call himself “the Indian Brad Pitt” was led off in handcuffs to begin a sentence that translated to six months behind bars.Chahal originally faced 47 felony charges after the first attack, on August 5, 2013. San Francisco Police Officer Anh Nguyen testified at the preliminary hearing.
“[The victim] stated she was unable to breathe,” Nguyen reported. “She stated that he said, ‘I’m going to kill you’ four times. She stated she was in fear for her life.”
Chahal was looking at serious prison time, and that was not at all how it was supposed to go for a whiz who had been just 18 when he sold his first digital ad startup, ClickAgent, for $40 million. He sold a second digital ad startup, BlueLithium, for $300 million four years later. He had been declared “America’s Most Eligible Bachelor” by the TV show Extra! and deemed one of the planet’s “richest and fittest guys” by Men’s Health magazine.
And the future has seemed even brighter with the impending Initial Public Offering of his third digital ad start-up, RadiumOne. He now received an Initial Prison Offering from the district attorney that was measured in years.
The board of RadiumOne included Steve Westly, a tech mogul and a well-known figure in California politics. Court papers first cited by the Wall Street Journal indicate that Westly reached out to former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, who suggested he might be able to reach out to San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon to “back him off.”
As reported by the Journal, Chahal wrote Westly in an email with the subject line “Willie Brown,” saying: “Just met him. Wants $1 million if he can make this go away. Just gave him a $250K retainer. If you meet him tomorrow. Apply some pressure on him to make this go away in 2013.”
Westly replied, “Wow. That’s pricey, but probably worth it if he can make it happen. I suspect he will pull out all the stops to get this done.”
But the scheming became unnecessary when Chahal’s previous lawyer, a retired brigadier general and former prosecutor named James Lassart, managed to get the damning video excluded; the police had seized it before securing a warrant, having been afraid a tech titan like Chahal could erase it in a flash.
Bad turned worse as the victim opted to cease cooperating with the prosecution. Testimony in a civil suit would suggest that Chahal paid her as much as $4 million.
The Initial Prison Offering was reduced to no time at all. Chahal got off with three years probation and a 52-week domestic violence course. Chahal was five months into the course and his probation when he allegedly kicked a woman hard and often enough that she sought medical attention.
He had learned at least one thing from the previous attack: “Same room, same bed, just no security camera that we know of,” noted Beverly Upton, executive director of the San Francisco Domestic Violence Consortium.
The authorities moved to revoke Chahal’s probation, but this second victim returned to her native South Korea and was unavailable as a hearing before Judge Brown neared. Chahal seemed about to skate again.
Then the prosecutors successfully argued that the videotape from the first case could be used to establish a prior act in the probation proceedings. And prosecutors in California probation cases need only offer a “preponderance of the evidence,” not the beyond-reasonable-doubt as in criminal trials.
Judge Brown revoked Chahal’s probation and sentenced him to a year. Chahal remained free on $250,000 bail as he appealed. He offered an argument that the Court of Appeals deemed “a convoluted picture of the relevant events.”
“What happened is quite straightforward,” the court added.
The court was particularly terse and dismissive when it came to Chahal’s argument for excluding the video.
“But so what?” the judges remarked.
The appeal was denied, and Chahal was back in court on Friday, this time with Shapiro of the O.J. fame. Who better to represent you when you are a notable who has committed violence against women? Who else would suggest that you, the perpetrator, is the one who has suffered most? Who else would even think of suggesting you be allowed remain at home and sleep in the very same bed where you battered both your known victims?
The People Vs, Chahal seemed a mock-u-drama as Chahal was led off, in tears even though he would be serving not a tenth of his Initial Prison Offering.
Maybe O.J. can convey some incarceration tips to the Indian Brad Pitt.
Czech prime minister Andrej Babiš has condemned the past approach of Merkel’s Germany and the European Union to illegal immigration, branding it a “threat to European civilisation”.
Andrej Babiš, a Slovak-origin populist and billionaire tycoon sometimes described as the ‘Czech Trump’, told national television: “We do not want to live here in Africa or the Middle East. We have to stop [immigration from these places].”
He predicted that if immigration was not brought under control, public anger and disillusionment would grow, warning “Chemnitz is around the corner” — a reference to the large-scale public protests against Germany’s migrant policy following the fatal stabbing of a local man, allegedly by a Syrian and an Iraqi with a string of previous convictions.
“We have 1.5 million illegal migrants here. Our return policy is bad,” added the ANO leader, referring to the EU’s weak record on returning bogus asylum seekers, including the aforementioned Iraqi in Chemnitz, and killers like Anis Amri, who should not have been in Germany at all when he drove a stolen lorry into a packed Christmas market, having lied about his nationality, used multiple false identities, and been scheduled for deportation but was not detained while it was arranged.
As the leader of one of the Visegrád group of Central European nations opposed to mass migration and multiculturalism, now allied with Austria’s new conservative-nationalist coalition government and Italy’s insurgent populist coalition, Babiš was blunt on those Western European countries still pushing open borders policies.
“If they want to have more Islamic State supporters in France, the Netherlands or Belgium than they have now, that’s up to them,” he said.
He was very clear that the Czech Republic, like Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia, would continue to defy the EU’s attempts to redistribute migrants arriving in the EU under a compulsory quota system.
“We have lost four years foolishly debating quotas. In short, the message being sent is that Europe is open and that we have to care for everyone who comes illegally and will disperse them amongst us,” he explained in a separate interview, accusing migrants of “asylum shopping”.
Babiš, like Italian deputy prime minister, interior minister, and League leader Matteo Salvini, believes promoting strong borders is the correct solution to the migrant crisis, and wants the EU to help stabilise Libya and come to Turkey-style deals with that country, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt so they stop migrants at their own external borders.
The story of Andy Techmanski and Whitefish Energy has finally been told, and as so often seems to be the case, the true story is nothing like what was reported by the national media in the months following the destruction of the electric power grid in Puerto Rico by two hurricanes that hit the island late last year.
In an exclusive interview with Inter Lake features editor Lynnette Hintze, Techmanski told his own story of coming to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria not just to find work for his small independent company based in Whitefish, but also to give assistance to the people of Puerto Rico in the wake of a devastating storm that crippled the island’s economy. Techmanski did everything right, both from a business point of view and from an ethical point of view. He offered a favorable contract to the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority and then he delivered on it.
Sadly, because of a very tenuous connection to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, reporters latched on to the Whitefish Energy story not as a remarkable tale of what a can-do attitude can accomplish, but rather as something that must be too good to be true. As a result of that early, speculative and mostly misleading reporting, Techmanski ultimately lost the contract he had won fair and square, leaving most of the work to other companies. What we now know, thanks to the hard facts compiled by the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority itself, is that Whitefish Energy was far and away the most efficient power contractor on the job, and rather than saving the impoverished island money by canceling the contract, the exact opposite happened.
Whitefish Energy billed $141.1 million to restore five transmission line segments, a job which it completed in remarkably short time — less than 60 days. The other contractors have billed more than $2 billion in total, and have completed only 20 of the 33 transmission line segments that were assigned to them. Sounds like if there are going to be hearings about what went wrong in Puerto Rico, it should be to find out why Whitefish Energy was taken off the job, not why it won the original contract.
What’s particularly unseemly is that Whitefish Energy, which stayed on the job for 30 days after its contract was pulled, is still owed more than $100 million for services rendered. Former Labor Secretary Ray Donovan famously quipped “Which office do I go to get my reputation back?” after he was cleared of fraud charges by a jury. Techmanski could ask that same question, with the added query, “And what about my money?” Hopefully, Montana’s congressional delegation will look into this case and work to set things right.

Asia Nader didn't know whether to worry more about being diagnosed with a hole in her heart at the age of 21, or having to wait a year for Swedish doctors to fix it.
"I completely fell apart when I found out," she told AFP, remembering the long agonising months until she finally had her operation in June this year, one month before her 23rd birthday.
Sweden has the fifth-highest life expectancy in Europe and cancer survival rates are among the continent's highest, according to 2017 OECD figures.
But Swedes are frustrated over their universal healthcare, one of the main pillars of their cherished welfare state, with long waiting queues due to a shortage of nurses and available doctors in some areas.
"Swedes have little confidence that politicians will solve this," said Lisa Pelling, chief analyst at progressive think tank Arena Ide.
"There is a risk their faith in the welfare state will be eroded," she told AFP.
Swedes, who on average pay more than half of their income in tax, see access to healthcare as the most important issue in the September 9 general election, polls suggest.
Prime Minister Stefan Lofven's Social Democrats, the largest party, are on course for a record low score, after losing voters disgruntled over rising immigration putting a strain on the welfare system to the far-right Sweden Democrats.
- 'Lose time'-
Swedish law stipulates patients should wait no more than 90 days to undergo surgery or see a specialist. Yet every third patient waits longer, according to government figures.
Patients must also see a general practitioner within seven days, the second-longest deadline in Europe after Portugal (15 days).
Yet waiting times vary dramatically across Sweden's 21 counties responsible for financing hospitals.
One dental patient in central Dalarna county told AFP six months passed before his check-up, while emergency room queues at Stockholm's largest hospitals average four hours.
The 2016 nationwide median wait for prostate cancer surgery was 120 days, but 271 days in the northern county of Vasterbotten, official figures show.
Swedes also complain about not being able to see their own regular general practitioner -- and the ensuing lack of continuity -- as a growing number of doctors and nurses are temporary hires employed by staffing companies.
Some 80 percent of the healthcare sector is in need of nurses, according to official data.
Online services where patients see a doctor via webcam, have mushroomed as a result.
"Every time you seek help you also see a new doctor... This makes us lose time on assessments and follow-ups," Heidi Stenmyren, president of the Swedish Medical Association, told AFP.
- World's most expensive hospital -
In Solleftea, the premier's northern hometown with nearly 20,000 residents, the only maternity ward was shut down last year to save money.
With the closest maternity ward now 200 kilometres (125 miles) away, midwives offer parents-to-be classes on how to deliver babies in cars -- which some have since done.
Sweden has the EU's third-highest spending on healthcare -- 11 percent share of its GDP -- and the heart attack survival rate is above the OECD average.
"I get worried sometimes when people disparage Swedish healthcare as if it didn't work at all... It's not black or white," Lofven told Swedish television SVT.
But the number of hospital beds has declined in recent years, as has the average length of stay.
Frustrations peaked this year when it emerged that the bill for Stockholm's over-budget state-of-the-art New Karolinska Hospital would tick in at 61.4 billion kronor (5.8 billion euros, $6.7 billion) -- the most expensive hospital in the world.
And yet patients have had to be transferred to other overcrowded hospitals because some of the facilities are unusable.
Making matters worse, Sweden's ageing population has growing healthcare needs.
"In only five years, we will have 70,000 more people aged 75 or older... and that comes with more frequent illnesses," Lofven told AFP.
His Social Democrats have vowed to spend three billion kronor to hire more healthcare staff if re-elected.
The opposition Moderates, which governed for two consecutive terms before the Social Democrats took power in 2014, meanwhile want to reintroduce a law that rewards counties for shortening queues.
But critics say this just encourages doctors to prioritise easily-solved cases.
Keep these in mind as you contemplate the direction of the American government over the past 50 years and especially since the Obama election.

15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.
16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.
17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack.
