The 'greenie' are a scourge on humanity

German government struggles to unite on EU energy proposal

The EU Commission's proposal to classify nuclear power and natural gas plants as "green" investments has sparked debate in Germany's new coalition government. Conflict is also brewing between EU states.

Less than a month after Germany's new coalition government was sworn in, it is facing a major test: To find a united stance in response to a controversial proposal by the EU Commission, published on New Year's Eve.

The EU Commission wants to label natural gas and nuclear power as climate-friendly, and include investments in both energies on its long-awaited taxonomy list — a green labeling system for investments in the energy sector.

The list is part of the bloc's plans to decarbonize the European economy and build clean power plants, which will require the investment of billions of euros.

Under the draft proposal, the gas and nuclear plants must meet certain criteria: Investment in new nuclear plants as they are planned in France, the Netherlands, and Poland, can be considered "sustainable" only if respective states ensure they meet the latest technology standards, and provide a concrete plan for the disposal for high-level radioactive waste.

Natural gas plants could also be granted a green label for a limited period of time, provided certain criteria are met. These could involve limits on the amount of greenhouse gas emitted or proving that the plants can also be operated with green hydrogen or low-carbon gas.

The classification of economic activities by the EU Commission under the so-called taxonomy is intended to enable investors to switch their investments to more sustainable technologies and companies.

Divided coalition

In Germany, the main point of contention is the inclusion of natural gas plants. A spokesman for the German government initially welcomed the plans, saying that natural gas was "an important bridging technology on the way to greenhouse gas neutrality against the backdrop of the phasing out of nuclear energy and coal-fired power generation".

But massive criticism has followed from several ministers from the Green Party, the second-largest partner in the coalition government.

Climate and Economy Minister and Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck, told German press agency dpathat he felt the EU proposal "waters down the good label for sustainability."

"It's questionable whether this greenwashing will be accepted by the financial markets anyway," the Green politician said.

Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (Greens) also rated the EU proposal as "questionable."

Nuclear power to the rescue?

Natural gas transition

The pro-free market neoliberal Free Democrats (FDP), meanwhile, have pushed back against the criticism from their Green coalition partners.

"You're not a good European if you only accept decisions that suit you," FDP vice-chair Wolfgang Kubicki told German mass-circulation tabloid, Bild.

The coalition, he warned, has to "find a consensus on how we can achieve a balance between the goals of CO2 reduction and a stable energy supply."

FDP leader and Finance Minister Christian Lindner told the national Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper that, realistically, Germany "needs modern gas-fired power plants as a transition technology because we're doing away with coal and nuclear power." He suggested modern natural gas plants could later be converted to operate on hydrogen.

The center-left Social Democrats (SPD) who are the strongest government party,  has also previously said that natural gas will play an important part in the energy transition and that should be reflected in the EU's green finance taxonomy.

Par for the course

Klaus Jacob of the Research Center for Environment Policy at Berlin's Freie Universität says the debate within the government was completely foreseeable.

"This isn't a predetermined breaking point in the coalition," Jacob told DW.

"You can't make a serious plan from now till 2030, or till 2050. You always have to adjust to changing conditions. That's what the coalition is doing. If you look at the coalition agreement, you can see that not everything was negotiated. You can't foresee everything."

"Right now, you have the situation where the climate targets for 2022 and probably also 2023 won't be achieved. This means that immediate programs must be started in the sectors and by the ministries that particularly contribute to this.

So, we'll see immediate programs from the transport ministry (FDP), from construction (SPD), etc. And in the negotiation process that discerns whether that's sufficient, there's always a conflict between the departments."

Nuclear phaseout nearing completion

The three governing coalition parties are, however, in agreement when it comes to the phaseout of nuclear energy. Germany's last nuclear power plants are due to be decommissioned just a year from now.

The decision to phase out nuclear power was made during the 1998-2005 coalition between the SPD and Greens under Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, in response to the realization that there was no way to store nuclear waste safely. Almost two decades earlier, Germany's anti-nuclear protests gave birth to the Green Party and the phaseout has long been one of its core policies.

Angela Merkel's coalition government of center-right Christian Democrats and FDP then rolled back the phaseout. But in 2011, after the accident at the Fukushima atomic power plant in Japan, Merkel made an about-turn and decided to push through with the phaseout after all.

Referring to the EU's plans to green label nuclear energy, Environment Minister Lemke said the Commission "creates the great danger of blocking and damaging really viable, sustainable investments in favor of dangerous nuclear power."

While the new German government remains steadfast in phasing out nuclear energy, public opinion towards nuclear energy in Germany actually appears to be softening. A representative YouGov online survey for Welt am Sonntag newspaper in November, showed around half of the 2,000 respondents saying they were in favor of reversing the nuclear shutdown due to the recentsharp rise in energy prices.

Germany: The end of nuclear power plants

EU fissure

The 27 EU member states now have until January 12 to comment on the Commission's draft. But it's unlikely that the proposal can be blocked. Besides Germany, only Austria, Luxembourg, Denmark, and Portugal have voiced criticism.

Implementation can only be prevented if at least 20 EU countries (representing at least 65% of the total EU population) or at least 353 members of parliament vote against it.

Other EU countries are continuing to push nuclear energy and campaign for it to be included on the EU's list of sustainable energy sources eligible for investment — prominently France which holds the rotating EU presidency and is heading for presidential elections in April.

Austria, meanwhile, is threatening to go to the European Court of Justice to stop the draft from being passed.

18-year-old woman admits to killing off-duty Cleveland cop during carjacking: prosecutor

An 18-year-old Ohio woman charged with killing an off-duty Cleveland cop during a New Year’s Eve carjacking has admitted to the slaying, a prosecutor said Monday.

Tamara Unique McLoyd, of Garfield Heights, confessed to fatally shooting Officer Shane Bartek, 25, at an apartment complex on Cleveland’s West Side, where the cop who joined the department in 2019 was shot twice in the back during an ambush Friday, Cleveland.com reported.

McLoyd, who was charged with aggravated murder, told investigators following her arrest early Saturday that she shot Bartek, Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Jose Torres told a judge during her first court appearance Monday.

McLoyd “ambushed” Bartek and shot him after he tried to fight back during an ensuing struggle, according to police and court records cited by the outlet.

Torres said Monday McLoyd then drove off in Bartek’s car and later gave the vehicle to Anthony Butler Jr., 25, who was arrested after a high-speed chase. The pursuit reportedly ended in nearby Euclid when Butler crashed into a fence.

Investigators also recovered a gun in Bartek’s stolen car believed to be the firearm used to shoot the officer, police said. Butler has been charged with receiving stolen property and fleeing and eluding, according to the outlet.

AOC narccisism and arrogance knows no bounds

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) triggered a social media storm on New Year's Eve after she claimed that her Republican critics are "mad they can’t date me" and accused them of "projecting their sexual frustrations" onto her boyfriend.

What is the background?

Ocasio-Cortez faced backlash late last week after she was caught vacationing in Florida while her constituents in New York City battled skyrocketing COVID-19 cases.

National Review reported:

Ocasio-Cortez was spotted dining in Miami Beach, Fla., on Thursday, according to a tip received by National Review, on the same day that her native New York City reported a record number of Covid-19 cases.

Photos obtained by National Review show Ocasio-Cortez seated outside Doraku Sushi and Izakaya in Miami Beach Thursday afternoon, raising a cocktail in one and checking her phone in another.

How did AOC respond?

The New York Democrat responded by claiming her GOP critics are "creepy weirdos" who need therapy to address their "deranged sexual frustrations."

"If Republicans are mad they can’t date me they can just say that instead of projecting their sexual frustrations onto my boyfriend’s feet," Ocasio-Cortez said. "Ya creepy weirdos."

"It’s starting to get old ignoring the very obvious, strange, and deranged sexual frustrations that underpin the Republican fixation on me, women, & LGBT+ people in general," she added. "These people clearly need therapy, won’t do it, and use politics as their outlet instead. It’s really weird."

Nearly two-thirds of the staff based at the Princess Elisabeth Polar Station in Antarctica have been infected with COVID-19 despite having strict health protocols in place to try to stop the spread of the respiratory disease.

Since Dec. 14, at least 16 of the 25 workers at the Princess Elisabeth Polar Station have caught the coronavirus. The first case was a researcher who had arrived at the base seven days earlier.

The infected researchers were put into quarantine following the positive test. There are two emergency doctors at the Princess Elisabeth Polar Station treating the COVID-positive researchers.

The spread of COVID-19 was surprising for many since all of the researchers were fully vaccinated. The scientists also had to take several PCR tests and quarantine before traveling to the polar station.

This is a birthing person and not a mother

NEWS

Authorities say that the mother of a murdered 5-year-old girl reportedly sold her child as a sex slave before the child was brutally murdered.

Police charged 37-year-old Jeremy Tremain Williams in connection with the child's death and charged 35-year-old Kristy Marie Siple with murder during a kidnapping, murder during rape, murder during sodomy, and human trafficking.

What are the details?

Authorities discovered the lifeless body of 5-year-old Kamarie Holland in December after Williams allegedly asphyxiated the child with a ligature.

A warrant against Siple — who also goes by Kristy Hoskins — states that the woman knowingly subjected the child to sexual servitude.“She did agree with another person to pay her for having sexual intercourse and sodomy with her minor daughter,’’ the document states, according to AL.com.

PEDOPHILES COMING FOR THEIR RIGHTS...destigmatize means decriminalize

On Nov. 8, Old Dominion sociology and criminology professor Allyn Walker gave an interview in which he asserted the need to destigmatize pedophiles by redefining them as “minor-attracted persons” (MAPs). Walker stated, “We have a tendency to want to categorize people with these attractions as evil or morally corrupt,” and that when people “hear the term ‘pedophile,’ they automatically assume that it means a sex offender, and that isn’t true.”

Shortly after this interview, students at Old Dominion protested over the professor’s attempt to obfuscate the nature of sexual predators. Although the university furloughed Walker, the professor continued to defend his stance while attacking his critics as hostile to academic freedom and misguided by “rightwing media.”

The Walker incident is not a standalone event. In fact, his advocacy for pedophiles highlights the crisis that critical theory poses for higher education, as it attempts to dismantle every social taboo and normalize every form of immoral conduct.

Funny that: criminals don't take laws seriously. When there becomes here; here becomes there!

A shooting this week in the city of Linköping was the 47th fatal shooting so far this year, matching Sweden’s record-high number of shootings that took place in 2020.

This year has continued Sweden’s trend of seeing at least 40 fatal shootings per year since 2017, according to Swedish police statistics. Much of the firearms violence has been linked to organised gang crime which remains a major problem throughout the country.

Oregon Business Owner Ordered to Remove American Flag Mural on Private Property..when the 'woke' take over

Oregon Business Owner Ordered to Remove American Flag Mural on Private Property

A business owner in Salem, Oregon, painted a mural honoring the American flag and the Marines who raised it at Iwo Jima. Most observers considered it a beautiful memorial and an attractive use of an otherwise nondescript wall. The owner of the business commissioned a local artist to create the tasteful and fetching display of patriotism.

The Salem City Council has ordered him to remove it, or face fines of up to $200 per day.

The artist, Mario De Leon, raised the alarm in a Facebook post:

What’s up everybody. The city of Salem is forcing @valleyroofingoregon to remove the mural I painted or to give the mural to the Salem art society. This mural is painted on the property of the business owner. Far away from the street or city property. The city is fining him 200 plus dollars a day if it doesn’t get removed. Or he has to give the mural to some art society. .
We are making a petition to keep it up.
Not only do they want it removed immediately. But they want it removed during the winter. Where you cant even paint over it. What a play by the city of Salem.
Remove it plus fines. Or give it to a art society and let them have their way with it.
Even when we help fight the wars they don’t want us to be talking about our contribution.
We will post the petition when the time comes.

One commenter identified the problem, saying, “It has to do with the Salem City Public Art Committee. All public art is supposed to be sanctioned by them. Apparently, even on private property.”

White people infected with COVID in New York State - the hardest hit state in the country - are in jeopardy of being turned away from potential lifesaving treatments in favor of other more at-risk races because of a national shortage of two promising types of medical treatments.

In a shocking memo sent out by the state's Health Department and approved by Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday, white residents were told not to bother trying to get Pfizer's Paxlovid pill or monoclonal antibody treatments.

'Non-white race or Hispanic/Latino ethnicity should be considered a risk factor as longstanding systemic health and social inequities have contributed to an increased risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19,'  the document reads.
