- Aaron Fulk, 48, was caught on camera brutally attacking 66-year-old Rodney Peterman, striking him in the back of the head multiple times with a metal pole
- Peterman died four days later in a Seattle hospital
- Fulk is currently being held at the King County Jail on $2.5 million bond after prosecutors argued he was a clear danger to the public
- He has pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder
- Eight days before the attack, he was released by a judge in Pierce County, Washington after threatening a security guard working at a transit stop
- Pierce County Superior Court Judge Philip Thornton released him without bail after telling him 'not to commit any more crimes'
- Seattle's city council voted in the fall of 2020 and 2021 to defund the police and since then the force has remained chronically understaffed
- The new mayor of Seattle, Bruce Harrell, was elected to improve the situation in the city and described the police force as 'devastated and demoralized'
- Harrell has prioritized tackling the city's homeless problem - one of the worst in the nation - but the move has taken resources from other areas
