Fact Check: Lousy Jobs Report Brings Out The Worst In Biden-Harris

Shortly after Friday’s anemic jobs report came out, the stock market tumbled, recession fears rose, and the Biden-Harris administration issued another Pollyannish report about how great the economy is doing – this time with bigger and bolder lies.

Not only did just 114,000 jobs get created in July, which was well below economists’ expectations, but the jobless rate went up for the fourth consecutive month to 4.3% as 352,000 joined the unemployment lines. That’s not exactly “Morning in America.”

It gets worse.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also admitted that it had overestimated the job gains in both May and June by a total of 29,000. This continues a nearly unbroken and highly suspicious trend that has resulted in the BLS claiming big job gains each month – which garnered great press for Biden-Harris – then quietly cutting those numbers in subsequent months, often by substantial amounts. So far this year, 279,000 have disappeared.

It also continues the mysterious gap between the number of new payroll jobs reported each month and the number of people who claim to have gained employment in those same months. While 114,000 jobs were created in July, for example, just 67,000 people said they got jobs.

Over the past three years, this gap has widened considerably.

Then there’s the fact that during the alleged Biden-Harris jobs boom, the number of unemployed has climbed 1.3 million since last July.

But what really stood out was the Biden-Harris administration’s statement. We decided to fact-check the claims, something the press studiously refuses to do when it comes to this administration, and here’s what we found:

“Since Vice President Harris and I took office, our economy has created nearly 16 million jobs …” — FALSE

As we have pointed out countless times in this space, Biden-Harris are crediting themselves with “creating” jobs that were simply replacing ones lost during the COVID-19 lockdowns. The right way to compare job gains is to compare the current job market to the previous peak. When you do that, you find that there have only been 6.4 million net new jobs created since Biden-Harris took office, which is nothing to brag about.

And as we have also noted, even that number is a wild exaggeration. See “The Unvarnished Truth About That ‘Blockbuster’ Jobs Report.”

“… average unemployment has been lower than during any administration in 50 years …” — GROSSLY MISLEADING

The official unemployment number can be almost completely unreliable if you fail to consider the fact that it counts only those who are actively looking for jobs as unemployed. If you give up looking entirely, you aren’t considered unemployed by the BLS. Normally, this doesn’t make a huge difference, unless there has been a massive increase in the number of labor dropouts.

And that’s exactly what has happened. Today, there are 5 million more people who are “out of the labor force” than there were just before the COVID lockdowns.

If you adjust for that, the unemployment rate has never been below 4% during Biden-Harris’ entire time in the White House. And today, it would be 5.2%.

“… and incomes have risen faster than prices.” — FALSE

This is just flat-out a lie. So far this year, hourly wages have climbed 1.4%. But the Consumer Price Index has climbed 1.9%. Since Biden-Harris took office, wages increased 16.9%, but that hasn’t been nearly enough to keep up with the 20.1% increase in prices.

“Today’s report shows employment is growing more gradually at a time when inflation has declined significantly.” — MISLEADING

Inflation hasn’t “declined” at all. It is still going up at a faster rate than it had for decades before Biden-Harris took office. It’s just not going up at the 9% peak it hit under Biden-Harris. Prices today are 20% higher than they were when Biden-Harris took office.

“Prices are still too high. We will keep fighting to lower costs by taking on price gouging, capping prescription drug costs, and building more homes.” — MOSTLY FALSE

Other than complaining about “shrinkflation,” the administration hasn’t actually done anything about “price gouging,” for the simple reason that it doesn’t exist. Prices are going up because of Biden-Harrisflation, not because corporations suddenly became greedy.

The claim that Biden-Harris “capped” prescription drug costs is a laugh. The administration managed to empower itself to limit payments on a handful of prescription drugs for Medicare patients. Drug prices for everyone else have been climbing rapidly – prescription drug prices are up 2.5% this year, according to the BLS.

As for “building more homes” – we have no idea where this one came from. The number of new home “starts” was down 11.3% last year compared with 2021, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. It was lower than the number of new starts in 2006.

“Congressional Republicans are siding with special interests at the expense of the middle class — with more tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations while threatening Social Security and Medicare. While they try to take us back, we will keep fighting for the future.” — MOSTLY FALSE

The idea that Republicans are “siding with special interests” is one of the most shopworn claims made by Democrats, as is the claim that they are “threatening” Social Security and Medicare – both of which have seen their financial outlooks sharply deteriorate under Biden-Harris.

What is true is that Republicans want to “take us back.” They do. So do most of the American people. Because they want to take us back to a time when the economy was booming and people were prospering, just like they were under President Donald Trump.

An account of the terrors of working for Vice President Kamala Harris during the days she was a U.S. senator has resurfaced.

Terry McAteer, whose son worked briefly for Harris in a long-ago summer internship, wrote an op-ed for The Union in 2019 when Harris was in the midst of her failed campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

This is not exactly a startling revelation.

In 2021, as Harris’s staff was heading for the exit one after the other, Politico wrote a piece describing the vice president’s office as a hotbed of dysfunction.

NYC ‘gateway’ and tourist destination overrun by mentally ill, drug abusers: ‘Humanitarian crisis’

Unstable, strung-out homeless weirdos have swarmed large parts of Manhattan’s West Side, littering streets with needles and menacing locals and tourists alike — and there’s no help in sight.

The invasion of homeless, mentally ill and drug-abusing people is a full-blown “humanitarian crisis” greeting millions of tourists and office workers who arrive in Midtown and its highly trafficked surrounding neighborhoods, wrote Councilman Eric Bottcher in a recent letter to the mayor asking for aid.

“Our neighborhoods need help right now,” he wrote. “The status quo cannot be allowed to continue.”

The BBC has begun to remove Huw Edwards from some of its archive footage after the former broadcaster pleaded guilty to making indecent images of children.

It is starting with family and entertainment content on iPlayer, according to the Observer which first reported on the move.

Until last year, Edwards was one of the main presenters on BBC One's News at Ten and often fronted coverage of major national events.

“As you would expect we are actively considering the availability of our archive," a BBC spokesperson said.

Taliban Gets $239 Mil in U.S. Afghanistan Aid after State Dept. Fails to Vet Awardees

https://www.judicialwatch.org/taliban-gets-239-mil/

Less than a year after Judicial Watch reported that the Taliban has established fake nonprofits to steal millions of dollars in U.S. aid to Afghanistan, a new investigation reveals that the terrorist group has also received hundreds of millions in development assistance from Uncle Sam because the State Department fails to properly vet award recipients. At least $239 million have likely filled the coffers of the extremists running the Islamic republic since the 2021 U.S. military withdraw, according to a report published this month by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR). The money was disbursed by State Department divisions known as Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL) and International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) to implement development projects intended to help achieve American foreign policy and national security goals in Afghanistan.

Investigators found that the State Department failed to comply with its own counterterrorism partner vetting requirements in Afghanistan before awarding at least 29 grants to various local entities. The agency has a system to identify whether prospective awardees have a record of ethical business practices and is supposed to conduct a risk assessment to determine if programming funds may benefit terrorists or terrorist-affiliates before distributing American taxpayer dollars. In the more than two dozen cases examined, the agency did not bother and failed to keep proper records. “Because DRL and INL could not demonstrate their compliance with State’s partner vetting requirements, there is an increased risk that terrorist and terrorist affiliated individuals and entities may have illegally benefited from State spending in Afghanistan,” the SIGAR report says. “As State continues to spend U.S. taxpayer funds on programs intended to benefit the Afghan people, it is critical that State knows who is actually benefitting from this assistance in order to prevent the aid from being diverted to the Taliban or other sanctioned parties, and to enable policymakers and other oversight authorities to better scrutinize the risks posed by State’s spending.”

The watchdog found issues with 29 awards distributed by DRL and INL. For instance, DRL failed to properly screen the recipients of seven awards totaling about $12 million, investigators found. INL did not provide any supporting documentation for 19 of its 22 awards totaling about $295 million so there is no way to determine if they complied with the vetting requirements. The State Department acknowledged that not all its bureaus have complied with document retention requirements, which makes it conveniently impossible to fully assess the magnitude of its transgressions. The explanation offered for INL not retaining records is “employee turnover and the dissolution of the Afghanistan-Pakistan office,” according to the report. SIGAR points out that, given the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, it is critical that U.S. government activities adhere to the laws, regulations, and policies intended to prevent certain transactions with terrorists.

Besides establishing fraudulent non-governmental organizations (NGO) to loot big chunks of the $3 billion in humanitarian aid that the U.S. has given Afghanistan since the Biden administration’s abrupt military withdraw, the Taliban has raked in millions more by charging taxes, permit fees and import duties. That money has flowed through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), a famously corrupt State Department arm that got $63.1 billion for foreign assistance and diplomatic engagement this year, and the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), the government’s international broadcasting services that aims to inform, engage, and connect people around the world in support of freedom and democracy. The United Nations has also received $1.6 billion in U.S. funding for Afghanistan and a large percentage of that money most likely went to the Taliban as well, according to a federal audit, because the U.S. government does not require the leftist world body to report on taxes, fees or duties incurred on American funds for activities in Afghanistan.

More than 30 killed in Somalia beach attack

A suicide bomber and several gunmen attacked the popular Lido Beach in Mogadishu. Terrorist group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack.

At least 32 people have been killed and dozens more were injured in an attack at a popular beach in Mogadishu, Somalia, authorities said on Saturday.

The incident occurred when a suicide bomber and gunmen targeted Lido Beach late on Friday night.

"More than 32 civilians died in this attack, and about 63 others were wounded, some of them critically," police spokesman Abdifatah Adan Hassan told reporters, increasing the initial death toll from seven

Gunmen open fire at beach

Witnesses said a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest next to a hotel overlooking the beach.

Moments later, five gunmen stormed the area and opened fire.

"The merciless terrorists shot civilians randomly and I saw seven dead bodies along the beach," police officer Mohamed Omar initially told the French AFP news agency on Saturday.

"There were wounded people as well but most of the civilians were rescued by the security forces," he added.

Police said they shot dead all five gunmen. A sixth perpetrator "blew himself up" at the beach.

Local authorities said the attackers were members of terrorist group al-Shabab, which had controlled vast areas of Somalia until it was pushed back in a government counteroffensive since 2022. The group also claimed responsibility for the attack.
