Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) has asked supporters to publicly harass Republicans, and she has repeatedly called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. But on Friday, the National Newspaper Publishers Association gave Waters its “National Leadership Award.”

What is the NNPA?

The NNPA calls itself the “most influential Black-owned media resource in America.” The group gives the leadership award during its annual Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Week.
Last week, Waters reiterated comments she made in June about Trump cabinet members and supporters.
“I said, if you see them anywhere, if you see them in a restaurant, if you see them in a department store, even at a gasoline station, just tell them, you’re not welcome here or anywhere,” Waters told The Hill.
“Of course, it frightened a lot of people,” she added.
Waters also said her remarks were not a call to violence.
She used her acceptance speech for the “National Leadership Award,” as an opportunity to bash Trump.
“It is no secret that, as was said by [NNPA President and CEO] Ben Chavis, the president doesn’t like me and I don’t like him either,” Waters said.
She went on to once again express her desire to see Trump impeached.
“No, I don’t like him,” Waters said. “Yes, I have worked against him. No, I didn’t go to his inauguration. No, I didn’t go to the State of the Union. No, I do not go to the White House. No, I do not care for him. All I want for him and about him is to be impeached and get him out of the White House.”
Waters took it a step further by saying saying she will not miss a chance criticize the president.
“Listen, you didn’t come to hear me talk about number 45,” she said. “You just wanted me to come and receive this award and to say thank you, but I shall not be anywhere, no matter what is going on, that I don’t tell you about number 45.”
She also encouraged the publishers to help vote out Trump supporters.
NNPA’s credo reads, in part: “…Hating no person, the Black Press strives to help every person in the firm belief that all are hurt as long as anyone is held back.”
“I want you, in whatever way that you do what you do, to please allocate all of the front pages to the get-out-the-vote operations in our communities,” Waters said.

What has Trump said about Waters?

In return, Trump has not held back in expressing his dislike of Waters.
Over time, he has called Waters an “extraordinarily low IQ person,” “corrupt,” and “crazy.”
