Selective outrage: One woman is beaten and proof provided; another has a vague recollection of something that happened 36 years ago as a teenager.

The former girlfriend of Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) posted a medical document on Twitter that shows she complained to doctors in 2017 about alleged physical and emotional abuse by the congressman.
Karen Monahan publicly accused Ellison of domestic abuse in August.
In the medical document, Monahan states she suffered “in a very stressful environment for years,” and dealt with “emotional and physical abuse,” prior to the end of the relationship.
In a Twitter post of the document on Wednesday, Monahan wrote: “When I post this, it gets deleted every time.”
In the document, Monahan states her former partner is Ellison and she fears retribution if she names him publicly. It also states she did not sustain any physical injuries that required an examination.
Ellison won the Democratic primary for Minnesota attorney general just days after Monahan claimed he verbally abused her and once tried to drag her off a bed. She also made allegations about “narcissist abuse.”
She told the New York Times, “It’s the gaslighting, it’s the habitual lying…It was crazy-making.”
Monahan’s son first raised the allegations in a Facebook post, according to reports. He claimed there was a cellphone video of the congressman pulling Monahan from a bed and cursing at her.
She later confirmed her son’s post. Monahan also told the media she will not release the video because it is humiliating.
Other posts she has written or re-tweeted about narcissism, include:
Ellison said the video doesn’t exist.
“I never behaved this way,” he told the New York Times in August, “any characterization otherwise is false.”
After becoming the first Muslim elected to Congress in 2006, Ellison was viewed as a representation of the Democratic Party’s commitment to diversity and equal rights, the New York Times reported.
Ellison’s supporters say Monahan’s claims are politically motivated. In contrast, Monahan’s supporters say she is the one who should be believed.
Ellison’s current girlfriend, Monica Hurtado, said she has only seen him treat women with respect. She was campaigning with Ellison in August.
“Karen is suffering,” Hurtado told the New York Times. “She is a victim — not of Keith, but of others during her childhood. Keith has been very clear in saying that nobody is out of the circle of compassion and that includes Karen.”
