The threats were made in emails to his mother, who forwarded them to officials
A former lecturer of philosophy at the University of California, Los Angeles, who was recently arrested after making unhinged threats of mass murder, had previously threatened to attack white people in emails to his mother.
Matthew Christopher Harris was arrested in Boulder, Colorado, after several hours in a standoff with police on Tuesday. He was eventually apprehended peacefully.
Harris came under investigation after sending a threatening email early on Sunday to some of his former students. The email contained links to his manifesto and one YouTube video entitled, “UCLA PHILOSOPHY (MASS SHOOTING).”
In response, UCLA cancelled classes and asked professors to continue their instruction online.
Los Angeles Police Department Chief Michel Moore said that Harris was “potentially planning for a mass violence or shooting event at UCLA.”
Court documents said that the 800-page manifesto contained threats of violence and many racist references. His YouTube videos also had racist epithets against East Asian people and Jews.
Officials had been alerted by the mother of Harris, who forwardedemails appearing to contain threats of violence. In one of those emails, Harris said that he wanted to "hunt" another professor and "put bullets in her skull." That professor sought and obtained a restraining order against him based on that email.Another email from Harris read, “Now I get shouted at all day and frankly I am ready to go Chris Dorner on these white people,” referring to the Los Angeles police officer who went on a murder spree against cops and killed four people.
At about the same time he was under investigation at UCLA over allegations that he sent violent and pornographic material to his students, according to court documents.
Authorities also said that Harris was prevented from purchasing a gun in November because of the restraining order.
Harris was arrested in an apartment located across the street from the University of Colorado campus.
